First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First American edition. Octavo. 340pp. Frontispiece portrait of the author. Publisher's file copy with a bookplate and a large stamp on the front endleaves. Topedge a bit soiled else just about fine in a soiled, good only dust jacket with some edge loss (mostly confined to the spine ends and bottom edge of the rear panel). Founder of the cheerily named Russian "Women's Battalion of Death" in WWI, Botchkareva become internationally famous near the end of the war, meeting with world leaders like Woodrow Wilson and King George V of England. Later labeled anti-revolutionary by the Bolsheviks, she was executed by them in 1920. A fascinating figure, in 2018 Botchkareva was given a lengthy obituary in *The New York Times* as part of their "Overlooked No More" series. A bright copy of her autobiography, written with a Russian-born American journalist, and presumably extremely uncommon in any sort of jacket.
