The author concludes by noting that regional differences in fertility can be largely attributed to the proportion of nonwhite farm operators in the southern United States, concluding that the high birth rate among southern farm families was primarily due to the high fertility of nonwhite farm families, who at that time made up a quarter of all souther farm families.
