Charming miniature book designed to record birthdays of family & friends, with verses by Mrs. Sale Barker complemented by the lovely Victorian illustrations of Kate Greenaway.Most are small pen-and-ink ones, with many full-page, full-color ones mixed in. Orig. published in the late 1800s, this is a later facsimile reprint (no date, but c. 1970s due to presence of ISBN), earlier than later reprints that added "for children" to the title. Miniature hardcover with textured & decorated tan cloth boards is in Good+ condition: some light soil/staining to exterior boards & outside page edges; interior clean. Old gift inscription on front endpapers, else unmarked, except that 1 entry had been filled in in pencil, now erased. Illustrated with a full color frontispiece and 120 b/w engraved illustrations throughout the text. Blue cloth boards decorated in black and gilt at front and spine, with two small chromolithographs pasted on at front, both chromolithographs badly chipped, with losses. Board soiledcorners rubbed, spine top and tail frayed. Front hinge cracked, but holding, back hinge starting to crack, first signature loose. With a 32 page publishers catalogue bound in at the back.

Leather Bound. Condition: Good (no DJ). Reprint. Square 24mo, pp. unnumbered, color plates, page decorations. Head of spine pulled, leather scuffed at rear and beginning to split at spine edges, gift inscription.

In good, bevelled-edged illustrated cloth boards, with children with bucket and spades in train carriage on front; small illustration of child on spine. The covers are tight and straight and fairly clean; corners and spine ends bumped and frayed. Clean, light beige end papers. Gilt cut edges. The text block is tightly bound and straight, with lovely illustrations (some coloured) by A.T. Elwes, F.A. Fraser, C.O. Murray and others. Many of fore edges have grubby marks; some pages show light foxing. Page 15/126 has once had a repair to small tear on top edge. No inscriptions etc.Overall good condition and very good for 1896. Rare.

Hence, certainly not more recent than 1968, perhaps more vintage. 48mo (in this case, 4" x 4" x 1"), cream jacket illustrated in pink, green and black by Greenaway, buff cloth boards illustrated in red and green also by Greenaway, 125 numbered pages as well as a number of unpaginated lined or blank pages for notation and. of course, Greenaway's full-color, full-page illustrations, which are also unpaginated. A beloved tiny book apparently printed many times over the years, meant for the recording the birthdays and other pertinent information of the friends of the young owner. Nice Very Good example, not far at all from Near Fine, in a strong Very Good jacket, which has not been price-clipped. See all scans. Ships in a stout, protective new box, of course. L10.
