Large 4to., bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in original quarter brown morocco with marbled paper covered boards, gilt lettering and cockerel on spine, top edge gilt, others uncut. Spine very mildly faded and edges a trifle browned, otherwise good. The text is an historical novel by Ivor Bannet about what Sandford calls "the true nature of the 'gentle' sex". Webb's engravings are vibrant and exciting as his black and white contrasts are far more marked than is usual. Booklabel of the American collector Clarence Hanson.

Printed on Arnold mouldmade paper, 12 wood-engravings, some full-page, by Clifford Webb, and reproductions of 3 pen-and-ink maps by Mina Greenhill. 253 pp. 7 ¾ in. x 11 ¼ in. Brown cloth spine, hinges and fore-edges, rest of binding is paper of lighter-brown shades over boards. Gilt titling on spine, fore-edge untrimmed. Some light tanning (foxing) to some prelims and to final blank pages. Rear paste-down has a small sticker with the name of a N. Y. bookseller. Lower corners have small bumps.

Full brown morocco binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe with five raised bands, gilt spine titling and large gilt designs by the artist on the upper and lower covers. Gilt ruled turn-ins. top edge gilt and others uncut. 3 maps by Mina Greenhill and 10 wood engravings by Clifford Webb, 8 full page. Some discolouration and light marking to the outer fore edge of the front board and some light fading to the outer fore edge of the rear cover with a neat previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Loosely inserted is the 4 page publisher's prospectus. The book is protected in loose Mylar archival cover. A very handsome production - 'Clifford Webb's wood engravings seemed to me the finest yet produced by this master of black and white.' (COCKALORUM 181). More images available on request.
