Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Arthur Rackham (illustrator). Limited Edition. A very good copy of the signed limited edition of Midsummer Night's Dream illustrated by Arthur Rackham. In the original gilt-decorated full vellum binding with 40 tipped-in colour plates, decorative title and numerous black and white illustrations and designs. It is signed by Arthur Rackham on the limitation page and is copy no 655/1000. It was published in November 1908 at a time when Arthur Rackham had become well known as an illustrator and it received wide acclaim. The limited edition had sold out by March 1909. The binding has gilt titles and a gilt scene on the front board and gilt titles to the spine. It is sound and bright and free of the usual warping, although the ties are missing. There is some light marking close to the spine and round the edges on the front board and a couple of small spots on the spine. The back board has a dark mark towards the spine joint and some scuff marks and small spots. Top page edges are gilted; remainder untrimmed. The endpapers and the plate mounts are a brown stock paper which is mottled to varying degrees. The contents are complete and clean and the quality of the printing is superb. The plates have captionned tissue guards. The guards and text pages adjoining the brown stock paper mounts tend to be brown toned or with light spotting. Rackham chose which sections of text to illustrate so the plates are unevenly distributed and some are in close sequence. These tend to have a slight ripple. There is a small repaired side edge tear on p95/6. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images. Signed by Illustrator(s).

Arthur Rackham. (illustrator). Author: Æsop. Translated by V. S. Vernon Jones. Introduction by G. K. Chesterton. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham. Title: Æsop's Fables. Publisher: London, William Heinemann; New York, Doubleday, Page & Co., 1912. First edition, limited issue. #1004 of 1450 copies signed by Arthur Rackham. Language: Text in English. Size: 11.5 x 9 inches. Pages: xxix, 223 pages. Binding: Very good original publisher's white/cream cloth binding, lettered and decorated in gilt on the upper cover and spine, featuring the Rackham-designed title vignette (hinges fine, overall slightly worn and scuffed - as shown, light age-toning and gentle surface soiling consistent with the period - as shown, spine lightly darkened and faded - as shown) under a protective removable mylar cover. Upper edge gilt. A very attractive example of this scarce binding. Content: Very good content (bright, tight and clean, rare light foxing, toning and staining - as shown). No loose or damaged leaves. Illustrations: Complete with thirteen full-page color plates by Arthur Rackham, each mounted on brown paper mounts, as issued, and numerous in-text black-and-white illustrations and decorative borders throughout. The plates are rich and well-preserved, retaining Rackham's characteristic delicacy of line and subdued color palette. All illustrations present.  ****  The book: Æsop's Fables stands among the most celebrated illustrated books of the early twentieth century, and this 1912 Rackham edition is universally regarded as one of the artist's finest achievements. Vernon Jones's elegant translation, paired with G. K. Chesterton's thoughtful introduction, provides a literary framework perfectly suited to Rackham's imaginative and often darkly humorous interpretations. The large format allows the illustrations to breathe, making this edition a cornerstone of any serious Rackham or Golden Age illustration collection.

ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR Arthur Rackham RWS (September 1867 - September 1939) was an English book illustrator. He is recognized as one of the leading figures during the Golden Age of British book illustration. His work is noted for its robust pen and ink drawings, which were combined with the use of watercolor, a technique he developed due to his background as a journalistic illustrator. Rackham's 51 color pieces for the early American tale Rip Van Winkle became a turning point in the production of books since - through color-separated printing - it featured the accurate reproduction of color artwork. Arthur Rackham is widely regarded as one of the leading illustrators from the 'Golden Age' of British book illustration which roughly encompassed the years from 1890 until the end of the First World War. During that period, there was a strong market for high quality illustrated books which typically were given as Christmas gifts. Arthur Rackham (illustrator). TITLE: Peer Gynt by Henrik Ibsen, George G. Harrap & Co., 1936._____DESCRIPTION: Limited edition, No. 231 of 460 copies. Large paper copy. Quarto (4t0.) 10 3/4 x 7 3/4 inches (266 x 198 mm), 255 pages. Rebound in modern full vellum, preserving the original gilt-stamped portions of the original binding from the front board and spine, which are then inlaid in place (see photos). Original brown pictorial endpapers preserved. Twelve color plates (including frontispiece) by Arthur Rackham protected with letterpress captioned tissue guards. Introduction by R. Farquharson, the translator, who chose to employ unrhymed verse to keep as close to the original meaning of the play. Signed by Rackham in the colophon. Housed in a custom-built clamshell case with leather ties (2 of 4 ties missing). Book protected with a clear archival Grafix Dura Lar dust wrapper._____CONDITION: Vellum binding is clean (rebound). Covers are slightly bowed (concave) with the front cover edge moving approximately 1/2 inch away from the text block (see photo) due to shrinking of the original vellum with age. No marking, ex-libris, etc._____DISCUSSION: This is a classic from the Golden Age of Illustration and one of Arthur Rackham's final works before dying of cancer in 1939. Rackham had a gift for portraying fantastical creatures, making this one of his most successful illustrated books._____NOTE: Estimated international shipping cost WITHOUT tracking to the United Kingdom and Europe is $75 U.S. dollars. Evans Former chairman and managing director of publisher William Heinemann Limited (1883-1944) Illustrated By: Arthur Rackham Arthur Rackham RWS (19 September 1867 - 6 September 1939) was an English book illustrator. He is recognised as one of the leading figures during the Golden Age of British book illustration. His work is noted for its robust pen and ink drawings, which were combined with the use of watercolour, a technique he developed due to his background as a journalistic illustrator. Rackham's 51 colour pieces for the early American tale Rip Van Winkle became a turning point in the production of books since - through colour-separated printing - it featured the accurate reproduction of colour artwork. His best-known works also include the illustrations for Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm. Format: Hardcover, quarto (4to 9+1?2 × 12 241 × 305),Pages Language: English Dust Jacket: No Jacket, Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket Published By: William Heinemann & J.B. Lippincott Co, London Synopsis: The earliest known version of The Sleeping Beauty is found in the narrative Perceforest, composed between 1330 and 1344. The tale was first published in 1634 by Giambattista Basile in his collection of tales titled The Pentamerone. Basile's version was later adapted and published by Charles Perrault in his Histoires ou Contes du Temps Passé in 1697. Perrault (1628 1703) was among the first writers to bring magical children s stories into the literary mainstream, proving to his original seventeenth century readers that such works were important and enjoyable, as well as thought-provoking. The version that was later collected and printed in 1812 by the Brothers Grimm was an orally transmitted version of the literary tale published by Perrault. In 1919, C.S. Evans adapted and expanded the beloved and cherished stories of Cinderella and then The Sleeping Beauty in order to give his brilliant illustrator, Arthur Rackham, maximum opportunity to exercise his gifts. The product of their collaboration are two of the most wonderful editions produced of these, or any other, fairy tales. In these 1919 and 1920 printings, Rackham mastered his black and white silhouette style. "Cinderella and The Sleeping Beauty differed from Rackham s preceding books in relying almost wholly on silhouette for their effect. It is immediately clear from the collection of images that Rackham is a master of the medium, being able to evoke character and humor by profile and gesture alone and allowing the two-dimensional effect of his pen work to lead the reader through the book and keep the story going." (James Hamilton. Arthur Rackham: A Biography, p. 188) Thoroughly illustrated with numerous illustrations and in-text silhouettes, this book is a testament to Rackham s illustrating prowess. Rackham s fanciful imagination gave his illustration. Signed by Illustrator(s).

Combined with Arthur Rackham's exceptional illustrations, The Compleat Angler becomes a visual joy and an ideal gift for aficionados.
