Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 2nd Edition. Original wrappers. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. [ii], 123 p., 17 plates and a huge folded plate showing the legends of nautical charts. Second and the last edition of this superb and very detailed illustrated pilot guide to Mediterranean coasts for vessels and mariners, starting from the Marmaris Lighthouse in Mugla to Payas in Iskenderun, the last Turkish coastline on the East Mediterranean. Barkinay wrote this guide while he was the director of the Marine branch of the General Directorate of the Turkish Mapping & Cartography. Barkinay was the leading name for mapping the Turkish coastal terrains. After the proclamation of the republic, he drew a detailed map of the entire Turkish coasts beside his guides to the Black Sea, the Archipelago, and the Mediterranean shorelines. Ahmet Rasim, who served on the Beirut Yacht in 1914, graduated from the Mekteb-i Bahriye [i.e. Naval School] in 1903 with the rank of lieutenant. He translated important books on navigation published in English into Ottoman Turkish. He learned Russian and during his duty in 1906, together with the Russian Zoologist Zernov, he conducted research on marine animals in the Black Sea, near the mouth of the Kizilirmak. He started to work in the newly established Military Academy Branch Of Naval Cartography in 1911. During the Balkan War in 1912, he took part in the mapping of the Karaburun Eastern Port of the Çatalca defense line.
