Johann Caspar Zeuss (1806 - 1856), der als Begründer der keltischen Philologie gilt, hatte sich schon in seiner Studienzeit eingehend mit Jacob Grimms Deutscher Grammatik befaßt. Den Anstoß zur vorliegenden Darstellung jedoch hatte eine Arbeit von Zeuss' Lehrer Mannert gegeben. Zeuss' "kritische Völkerkunde des alten Nord- und Mitteleuropa" wurde "einer der beiden Träger seines wissenschaftlichen Ruhmes" (ADB). Sie vereinte auf beeindruckende Weise linguistische und historische Gelehrsamkeit und wurde lange Zeit von Gelehrten und Studenten als Lexikon und Quellenbuch benutzt.
