Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Stern, Yosef, woodcut by (illustrator). Hebrew translation of the German historical novel Weg ohne Ende by Gershon Stern, dealing with the expulsion of the Jews from Prague in 1745. 295 pages. 175 x 122 mm. Gerson Stern, born on July 7, 1874, came from a long-established Jewish merchant family from the Lower Saxon town of Holzminden on the Weser. The family moved to Elberfeld in 1884 in the Rhineland, where his father Joel Stern became a partner in a textile company. Gerson, the second son among five siblings, also became a merchant. In 1917 he married the 20 years younger Erna Schwarz, whose family came from the Lorraine Metz. In addition to his commercial activities, Gerson Stern also followed literary inclinations early on. His estate, which is kept in the Jewish National University Library (Jerusalem), contains several manuscript collections of poems ranging dating back to the 1890s. At first Stern did not think about a publication of his poems. More ambitious, on the other hand, were the two dramatic attempts "Symphonie" and "Das Ich im Lehnstuhl. According to his own information, Stern lost a large part of his assets during the inflation. The support of his parents-in-law, who owned a textile company in Frankfurt, where he himself was a partner until 1928, and a mortgage on the property in Kiedrich allowed him to live in some comfort. A serious illness forced him from 1931 to cease his commercial activity. Stern began at this time with detailed historical studies of Jewish life in Germany. He first turned to the history of his own family and wrote a chronicle of the family Stern from Holzminden, which he dedicated to his brother Emanuel on his 60th birthday in March 1933 and his son Joel Bar Mitzvah in December 1933. This family chronicle provided the impetus for his first major prose work, the novel "The Endless Path", which he wrote down in a relatively short time in 1933/34. In 1934, the novel was published by Erich Reiss Publishing House in Berlin. From 1933 onwards, even before the official ban, which prohibited Jewish publishers from publishing books by non-Jewish authors, only books by Jewish authors were published. Erich Reiss must have guessed how much the novel "Path without End" would appeal to Jewish readers of the time. He brought out this first book of a previously unknown author in a very high first edition run of 5,000 copies in view of the prevailing circumstances, which he was able to follow a few months later with a second edition of 4,000 copies. This was an unusual achievement under the particular time constraints of a decidedly Jewish book. Erich Reiss was imprisoned for several weeks in the Oranienburg concentration camp in 1938 during the November pogrom, before he was released on intercession by Karin Michaelis and Selma Lagerlöf and subsequently emigrated to the United States. But Gerson Stern had lost his publishing house in Germany as well. In 1939, the family emigrated to Palestine. Gerson Stern lived in Jerusalem in Palestine. His circle of friends included Shalom Ben-Chorin, the former chief editor of the Jewish Review Robert Weltsch, and above all Else Lasker-Schüler, who dedicated the first print of her poem My Blue Piano to the "Heimatfreund" in 1941. At the burial of the poet in 1945 on the Mount of Olives Samuel Josef Agnon and Gerson Stern spoke the Kaddish. A little later Stern wrote down his memories of her.
