Condition: Gut. 196 p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Schutzumschlag etwas abgenutzt, Seiten vergilbt, sonst sehr guter Zustand / Dust jacket somewhat worn, pages yellowed, otherwise in very good condition. - Hegel's Philosophy of History BURLEIGH TAYLOR WILKINS This interpretative essay seeks to make clear the essential features of Hegel's philosophy of history. It is the first book in English on the subject. Taking seriously Hegel's claim to have answered the question ''What is the ultimate purpose of the world?", Professor Wilkins explores Hegel's treatment of original, reflective, and philosophical history to determine what Hegel believed philosophy brings to and learns from the study of history. The author argues that the familiar picture of Hegel as being nonempirical and a priori in his approach to history is simplistic and-fails to do justice to the complex relationships which Hegel believed to exist between philosophy and history. He then goes on to discuss, with special reference to the philosophy of history, Hegel's views on mechanism and teleology and on contingency and necessity. Finally he compares and contrasts Hegel's ideas on historical explanation with those held by advocates of the Covering law model of explanation. Although Hegel is discussed in terms of his own philosophical preoccupations, Professor Wilkins shows that Hegel's concern with the problem of explaining human action was in some respects not unlike that of contemporary philosophers.
