Publishers' red cloth with gilt titles to spine and motif in blind to upper board. Spine sunned with minor wear at tips; top corner of upper board bumped and corners of lower board bruised. Inner hinges repaired with adhesive tape; numerous similar repairs at hinge to leaves and plates (margins only, text and illustrations unaffected). Light toning to endpapers and a little minor scattered faint foxing. History of boxing featuring matches and fighters from many nations including France, Germany and other European countries as well as the USA and UK and including fighters like Jack Dempsey, Kid Lewis, Jack Johnson and Tommy Ryan.The final chapter chronicles some facts on boxing such as the identity of the original "Nonpareil" and many other interesting pieces of information. The scarce first edition of this work from author and sportswriter Trevor Wignall, a first world war lieutenant and chief sportswriter for the Daily Express.This is Wignall's history of boxing, with chapters also on 'the financial side', 'the medical side', boxing in various countries and short biographies of important fighters, including Kid Lewis, Jack Dempsey and Tommy Ryan. Illustrated with thirty-two photographic plates, many depicting scenes of important fights and important figures in boxing. Collated, complete.This work belonged to the library of Philip Brocklehurst, bearing his armorial bookplate to the front pastedown. Brocklehurst is best known for being a member of the Nimrod Expedition in Antarctica of 1907 1909, led by Ernest Shackleton. A boxer himself, he represented Cambridge University at boxing in 1905, 1906 and 1907 as a lightweight against Oxford University, and obtained a half blue. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Shelf wear to spine head and tail. Small patch of fading to rear board. Contemporary owner's armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Light foxing to first few pages.
