Paper Photograph. Condition: Near fine. White House photograph of Vice President George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush, visiting with the White House Press Secretary James Brady. Brady was permanently disabled during the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan in 1981. (illustrator). Signed Photograph. Color photograph, measures 8" x 10". Stamped with "Official Photograph / The White House / Washington" on verso, with date code below. Tape residue to verso, previously framed. Inscribed on the white matte: "To Jim Brady, With best wishes. George Bush / Thanks for coming - Barbara." A great association copy. James "Jim" Brady (1940-2014) was the White House Press Secretary under President Ronald Reagan. His life took a dramatic turn on March 30, 1981, when he was shot in the head during the attempted assassination of President Reagan. The injury left Brady partially paralyzed and with some cognitive impairment. He remained the White House Press Secretary through the Reagan administration, with others filling the position as "acting" or "deputy" Press Secretaries. As Brady recovered, he became an ardent supporter of gun control. Alongside his wife, Sarah Brady, he dedicated his life to advocating for stricter handgun laws and regulations. This advocacy led to the passage of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act in 1993, which required background checks for handgun purchases from licensed dealers. In 2000, the White House briefing room was renamed the James S. Brady Press Room in his honor.

Cloth. Condition: Fine. White House photograph of the Bush family, inscribed to Alma Powell, the wife of Secretary of State Colin Powell. The photograph is signed by President George H.W. Bush, President George W. Bush, First Lady Laura Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush. (illustrator). Signed Photograph. Stated "Official Photograph - The White House / 06 jan 05" on verso, measuring 8x10. Housed in custom blue cloth folder, title in gilt on front cover over red morocco label. Laid in auction tag from Powell Estate Sale. Signed in black pen along bottom margin. An exceptional piece. On January 6th, 2005, the Bush family celebrated the 60th wedding anniversary of former President George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush at the White House. The black-tie affair was attended by friends and family, including Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, former Secretary of State James Baker, former British Prime Minister John Major, Brent Scowcroft and the recipient of this photograph, Alma Powell. Colin Powell (1937-2021) served as the United States Secretary of State during the George W. Bush administration, the first African American to hold the post. He also served as National Security Advisor to President Ronald Reagan (1987-1989) and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989-1993. Powell was discussed as a possible Republican presidential contender in 1996 and 2000, but he declined to run both times. He passed away in 2021, survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Alma Powell. Provenance: Potomac Auction House, Lot 1080, Estate of Colin Powell.
