Magazine / Periodical
Hardcover. The first reprint since 1700, more than 200 years previous, remarkable neglect given the Ward's journalistic skill, oft-scurilous subject matter, and his bawdy language. Great press-work on reasonably good paperstock, hardbound in tan boards with buckram-backed spine and simple title label. Cloth and label are very stained with handling; book remains handleable, its hinges perfectly sound, textblock cleanly with a touch here & there of exposure to damp, no markings at all not even an ownership.

Edward 'Ned' ward was a satirical writer and publican, one of the most colourful hack writers of all time, 'jovial, brutal, vulgar and graphic' and unfailingly scatological. His most famous work, The London Spy, appeared in monthly instalments from November 1698 shows a 'complete survey' of the London scene later pictured by Hogarth.

Ward (1667-1731) war ein englischer Satiriker und Schankwirt. Sein erfolgreichstes Werk war "The London Spy". Fast alle späteren Veröffentlichungen trugen, wie auch hier, den Vermerk "by Eward Ward, Author of the London Spy".
