hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1990 limited edition (395 copies) Book Club of California (San Francisco), [printed by W. Thomas Taylor], 7 1/4 x 10 1/4 inches tall hardbound, quarter red goatskin over grey Fabriano paper covered boards, [vi], 37, [3] pp., with a leaf from 2 Corinthians Chapter 3 from the 1582 first edition of the Rheims New Testament tipped in. Prospectus laid in. The slightest bit of bumping to the upper tip and lower edge of the front board. Otherwise, a very good to near fine copy, with a blank white dust jacket with moderate soiling to the front cover and a three-inch tear to the rear cover but which is nicely preserved and displayed in a clear archival Brodart sleeve. ~JJJ~ [2.0P] According to Robert D. Harlan, this book drew on leaves put aside by David Magee and not 'rediscovered' until years after Magee's death in the 1970s. 'The Two Hundredth Book' (San Francisco: Book Club of California 1993). W. Thomas Taylor's press was in Austin, Texas, making this the only Book Club of California leaf book to have been printed outside the State of California. De Hamel and Silver, 'Disbound and Dispersed: The Leaf Book Considered' (Chicago: The Caxton Club 2005), Exh. No. 39, Checklist 196, pp. 96-97. The Rhemes New Testament is the editio princeps of the Roman Catholic version of the New Testament in English. Translated from the Vulgate by Gregory Martin, under the supervision of William Allen (afterwards Cardinal Allen), and of Richard Bristow. The translation adheres very closely to the Latin, though it shows traces of careful comparison with the Greek. But its groundwork was practically supplied by the existing English versions, from which Martin did not hesitate to borrow freely. In particular there are many striking resemblances between Martin?s renderings and those in Myles Coverdale?s diglot of 1538. The leaf in this copy contains the beginning of Chapter 3 of St. Paul's second Letter to the Corinthians, in which Paul compares the old covenant of the law of Moses with the new covenant of faith in Christ. 'Now if the ministry of death, carved in letters on stone, was so glorious that the Israelites could not look intently at the face of Moses because of its glory that was going to fade, how much more will the ministry of the Spirit be glorious? For if the ministry of condemnation was glorious, the ministry of righteousness will abound much more in glory.'.
