Die Motivation, sich mit diesem Thema zu beschäftigen, liegt in der Tatsache begründet, dass mittlerweile nicht mehr nur große multinationale Konzerne, sondern auch kleinere Unternehmen, angelockt von neuen Markterschließungs- und Kostenreduzierungspotentialen, international tätig werden und in zunehmendem Maße Aktivitäten in ausländischen Märkten aufnehmen oder dorthin verlagern. Auf der anderen Seite scheinen aber die hohen Erwartungen an eine solche Internationalisierung häufig nicht erfüllt zu werden, sodass ein nicht unwesentlicher Teil dieser Unternehmen ihre Internationalisierungsbestrebungen wieder aufgeben und Aktivitäten aus dem Ausland an ihren Heimatstandort rückverlagern. Diese beiden gegenläufigen Beobachtungen legen die Vermutung nahe, dass die Internationalisierung von Aktivitäten zwar signifikante Erfolgspotentiale für die jeweiligen Unternehmen offenbart, eine ausreichende Realisierung dieser Potentiale aber eine so große Herausforderung darstellt, dass einige Unternehmen an ihr scheitern. Es stellt sich also die zentrale Frage, warum einige Unternehmen im Ausland scheitern", während andere augenscheinlich in der Lage sind, dort erfolgreich zu agieren.
