Title page, dedication page, pp. 17-24, [i]; Title page, dedication on verso, 8 pp. = The first paper being a work by the Swedish botanist and entomologist Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828), a student or 'apostle' of Linnaeus, defended by Petrus Jacobus Liedbeck, on 29 March 1826. It consists of an 8-page list of plants cultivated in the botanical garden of the university, and a single page, not numbered, with five "theses respondentis", the fourth being "In practicis scientiis aestimanda est speculatio, nisi vero ab experientia manuducatur falsa est illa". Vague damp-stain to the upper quarter, otherwise a very good, very wide-margined copy. The second paper being a similar thesis, defended by Elis Hedrén on 1 June 1825. It deals with polygamous plants. A very good, clean copy. Both papers are rare.

Marbled endpapers. = A seldom-seen entomological work by the Swedish botanist and entomologist Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828), a student or 'apostle' of Linnaeus, defended as a thesis by one of his own students, Samuel Türner (1762-1822). Uncut; with the widest possible margins. In the top margin of the first blank a small, printed label of "Bibliothèque d'Histoire naturelle de Dr Maurice Royer". Maurice Royer (1878-1942) was a French entomologist and Hemiptera specialist. Front board somewhat discoloured near the spine, light, mostly marginal foxing, otherwise a very good, unmarked copy. Trois volumes petits in-8° (13, 5 x 20, 5 cm), demi-reliure cuir marron clair avec deux pièces de titre sur le dos lisse. Il s'agit des 3 premiers numéros d'un ensemble de 4 (lesquels contiennent 27 planches).-Tome 1: un frontispice (THUNBERG) puis LXIV-417 et une planche. -Tome 2: X-430 et 4 planches.-Tome 3:- VIII-445 et 4 planches. (Le quatrième tome manquant est ainsi composé: XII-462 et 19 planches). Carl Peter Thunberg fut médecin et botaniste (élève de LINNE). Il s'engage à la Compagnie néerlandaises des Indes orientales où il apprend le hollandais dans le but de pouvoir faire des recherches botaniques au Japon, où seuls les Hollandais protestants sont admis (et encore, avec beaucoup de difficultés). Il réussit néanmoins à faire de nombreuses observations qui sont parmi les premières et les plus précieuses faites au Japon (non seulement sur la botanique mais sur la société japonaise en général).Malgré l'absence du 4ème tome, ces trois premiers exemplaires constituent un récit de voyage grande valeur. Rare.These five theses were all written by Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828) although they have as defenders respectively J. Borgstroem, P.E. Becklin, J. Akerman, C.F. Sebaldt and I. Haij. The first four treat Lepidoptera and the three plates all depict Lepidoptera. The last part treats Coleoptera. In all nine parts were published but all are rare. We offer here the first 5 parts.Thunberg was a botanist and zoologist and is well known as being one of Linnaeus most succesful students. After voyages to South Africa, Sri Lanka, Java and Japan he became a professor in Upsala University.

Charles Pierre THUNBERG (1743-1828), naturaliste suédois, docteur en médecine, entra au service de la Compagnie hollandaise des Indes orientales et fut envoyé en 1772 au Cap de Bonne Espérance où pendant trois ans il fit plusieurs excursions dans l'intérieur des régions habitées par les Hottentots et par les Cafres. En 1775, il se rendit à Java puis suivit comme médecin l'ambassade envoyée par la Compagnie au Japon, où il séjourna trois ans. Il y recueillit un grand nombre de plantes rares et inconnues, dont la thunbergie, et récolta de nombreux renseignements sur les coutumes, le commerce et les moeurs des habitants. This work is the results of his fifteen months stay and observation in Japan, where he was a surgeon with the Dutch East India Company, stationed at the Dutch factory in Deshima, in the Nagasaki harbour. When he returned to Sweden he succeeded Linneaus as professor at the University of Uppsala, from 1784 until his death.
