Condition: Acceptable. Most items will be dispatched the same or the next working day. Fair condition two volume hardback set of Brown's Bible from 1806. Significant wear to the boards and spine of both books, with the boards loose and coming away from the main textblock. Volume one contains neat inscriptions to the front endpaper of a couple getting married, with further notations about their four children. Textblock edges are a faded marble, with thumbing and general foxing to pages commensurate with age. Needs rebinding but would make a nice set. More photos available on request.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. The llustrated Family Bible, Containing The Old and New Testaments, &c., &c. With the Self-Interpreting and Explanatory Notes, and Marginal References, by the Late Rev. John Brown, Minister of the Gospel at Haddington, to which is Prefixed, An Introduction to the Right Understanding of the Oracles of God. Published by A. Fullarton & Co., Edinburgh, Glasgow and London. Undated, but c. 1860. This specific Fullarton edition would appear to be rather scarce - we can only identify a maximum of 9 copies listed in Worldcat's catalogue. A very good, approaching near fine, example of this substantial bible. Bound in full blackl leather with lovely blind embossed decoration with gilt border to the front. The spine has gilt decorated raised bands with a black morocco gilt title label. With mild scuffing and shelf wear, with mild corner bumping. Endpapers are feathered marble with burgundy cloth strengthening to inner hinges. Remains of label removal (probably family identification) to first pastedown. Binding is strong and firm, and spine straight. The text is near fine throughout. Clean, bright and clear, with plates in excellent condition. A few small and very occasional marginal closed tears to page edges. A few pages with light marginal spotting or finger marks, but overall a very well presented bible. It is pleasing to see that the family registry page is still present (located immediately after the end of the Old Testament). The bible was owned by the 'Comrie' family, with 5 lines of very neatly scripted entries dating between 1845 and 1873. Comrie is an old Scottish surname, originating from the area of the village of the same name in Perthshire. Gilt edges to text block are still shiny. Text in English. Weight approximately 3.26kg (unpacked). xl + 848pp. Approx Dimensions: Approximately 320mm high x 240mm wide 62mm deep. More photos on request. A heavy volume - extra postage may be payable.
Cloth. Condition: Good. Unamed (illustrator). A profusely illustrated edition of Late Rev. John Brown's 'The Self-Interpreting Bible'. A lovely example of Late Rev. John Brown's bible. John Brown's (1722-87) Self-interpreting Bible was originally published in 1778. Originally of Scottish farming stock, Brown was orphaned at twelve and became a shepherd. Having little formal schooling he taught himself Latin, Greek and Hebrew and later became a preacher in the Burgher branch of the Secession church. He wrote a number of books, many of them aimed at young people. This volume contains forty engraved plates. Rebound in cloth with the original spine preserved. Externally, generally smart. There is some wear to the extremities including marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally clean with some brown spotting, including to the plates and the occasional handling mark. There is one page towards the back (St paul's Epistles) which is missing a section of text, although the page has been mended. The title page has handling marks and perhaps has spent some time without boards. Good. book.
