London [1909, 31 pages, Meddelanden från K. vetenskapsakademiens Nobelinstitut, Band I, No. 14]. [" .,.Originally a physicist, but often referred to as a chemist, Arrhenius was one of the founders of the science of physical chemistry. He received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1903, becoming the first Swedish Nobel laureate. In 1905, he became director of the Nobel Institute, where he remained until his death. Arrhenius was the first to use principles of physical chemistry to estimate the extent to which increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide are responsible for the Earth's increasing surface temperature. His work played an important role in the emergence of modern climate science. In the 1960s, Charles David Keeling demonstrated that the quantity of human-caused carbon dioxide emissions into the air is enough to cause global warming.,.- wikipedia].

Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, very rare inscribed offprint. "In 1898 Arrhenius wrote a remarkable paper on the action of cosmic influence on physiological processes" (DSB). "In 1898 Arrhenius branched out into physiology, trying to demonstrate the influence of the lunar month on mortality, birth rates and menstruation. Statistics on about 30,000 male and female deaths collected by the Municipal Department of Health of Stockholm from 1883 to 1896 showed no regular fluctuations. He discovered a slight periodicity with respect to birth rates, again following the lunar month, in a population of 13,000 men and 11,000 women. This gave him the idea that these fluctuations might depend on the onset of menses. He collected statistics from the maternity wards of three Stockholm hospitals on the dates of the last menses before pregnancy of 10,416 women. Here he was at last able to establish the influence of a periodicity that was twice as prominent as that of birth rates. He found congruence between fluctuations in onset of menses and the twenty-six-day cycle he had established for atmospheric electricity. He surmised that this covariation was due to the higher voltage having an effect on the chemistry of the human organism, but he could not be more specific about the mechanism involved. In recent times, the phase locking of lunar and menstrual cycles has been confirmed using more rigorous methods than those used by Arrhenius" (Crawford, Arrhenius: From Ionic Theory to the Greenhouse Effect, p. 138). Arrhenius won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1903 "in recognition of the extraordinary services he has rendered to the advancement of chemistry by his electrolytic theory of dissociation." He is also credited with the first quantitative analysis of carbonic acid (carbon dioxide) and its role in climate change. 8vo, pp. 367-416 with one folding lithographed plate. Original printed wrappers (a few small chips to edges of wrappers).

New York, The Macmillan Company, 1907, kl.-8°, IX, (2), 399, (5) pp., orig. Leinenband; St. verso. Tit. First Edition! Svante August Arrhenius (1859-1927) "defined immunochemistry, and laid out its frontiers". Garrison & Morton "Svante August Arrhenius (1859-1927) a Swedish scientist awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (1903), for his discovery of electrolytic dissociation. He is also known as a prescient atmospheric physicist as he already in 1896 demonstrated the effect of radiatively active gases on planetary surface temperatures and made an attempt to quantify what he called the "greenhouse effect" especially of carbon dioxide on the earth's climate. His scientific career encompassed three distinct specialties within the broad fields of physics and chemistry: physical chemistry, cosmic physics, and the chemistry of immunology." "Among the many scientists that joined Arrhenius at the Nobel Institute was Thorwald Madsen from the Danish Serum Institute in Copenhagen who wanted to apply the new physical chemistry arguments to shed light on the "toxin-antitoxin" affinity reaction. This reaction was observed when a serum sample from an infected patient was added to a suspension of the micro-organisms that had caused the infection. The affinity question was raised at a time when our knowledge of proteins and their complex architecture was non-existent. The serological studies by the two colleagues met with opposition from those who opined that chemical models were inappropriate to explain the intricate processes of life. The opponents included supporters of the highly regarded physiologist Paul Ehrlich in Frankfurt, who had formulated the so-called "side-chain theory" of the immune response which postulated that the reaction involved a sequential formation and secretion of a series of complex reactive vesicles. This stood in stark contrast to the Arrhenius concept of the existence of a well-defined binding equilibrium between two entities, in turn considered to be a ridiculously simplistic notion by the opponents. The "Arrhenius-Ehrlich controversy" became quite a cause célèbre in the scientific community and the debate initiated by the two scientists raged for several years after the turn of the century. Arrhenius, who was always ready to express himself clearly in his writings supplemented by considerable experimental data, compiled a series of research reports that he had presented at the University of California, Berkeley in 1904, into a volume that he published under the title "Immunochemistry". By his insistence that chemical principles were at work even in physiological reactions he became the recognised father of an entirely new discipline." A Tribute to the Memory of Presented at the 2008 Annual Meeting of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences by Gustaf Arrhenius, Karin Caldwell and Svante Wold See - Rubin, L.P., Styles in Scientific Explanation: Paul Ehrlich and Svante Arrhenius on Immunochemistry, J. Hist. Medicine, October 1980, pp. 397-425. Garrison & Morton No. 2564.1; "Important Books in Immunology, 1892-1968" Silverstein.

Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, the rare offprint issue of Arrhenius's landmark discovery of the theory of electrolytic disassociation. Arrhenius was awarded the 1903 Nobel Prize in chemistry "in recognition of the extraordinary services he has rendered to the advancement of chemistry by his electrolytic theory of dissociation". "By 1880, it was known that solutions of certain compounds conduct electricity and that chemical reactions could occur when a current was passed. It was thought that the current decomposed the substance. In 1883 Arrhenius proposed a theory that substances were partly converted into an active form when dissolved. The active part was responsible for conductivity. In the case of acids and bases, he correlated the strength with the degree of decomposition on solution. This work was published as Reserches sur la conductibilite galvanique des electrolytes (1884; Researches on the Electrical Conductivity of Electrolytes) and submitted as his doctoral dissertation. Arrhenius sent his work to several leading physical chemists, including Jacobus van't Hoff. Friedrich Ostwald, and Rudolf Clausius, who were immediately impressed" (Biographical Encyclopedia of Scientists). Arrhenius is also credited with the first quantitative analysis of carbonic acid (carbon dioxide) and its role in climate change. 8vo, pp. [2], [1-3], 4-63, [1, blank], with 1 lithographed plate; [1-3], 4-89, [1, blank].
