Alothough Rex Stout's first novel was not published until 1929 and his famous detective Nero Wolfe didn't appear until 1934 , his writing career actually began as early as 1912. Between then and the publication of "Fer De Lance', Stout wrote four novels and more than thrity short stories for magazines such as Lippincott;s black Cat, Smart Set, and All-Story. Gathered in this collection are are 16 early crime stories written between 1913 and 1917 and never before available in book form.
