Eines der Hauptwerke des schwäbischen Pietisten und zeitweiligen Herrnhuters in einer Mischauflage. Band 1 in der Seitenzählung identisch, im Satz und Buchschmuck aber deutlich von der ersten Ausgabe bei Maucke in Schleiz abweichend. Band 2 möglicherweise erste Ausgabe; ohne das Register. - Steinhofer (Owen/Teck 1706 - Weinsberg 1761) hatte auf einer Bildungsreise nach Sachsen 1731 Zinzendorf kennengelernt, der ihn für die Brüdergemeine gewinnen wollte und ihn als Hofkaplan an den Ebersdorfer Grafen Heinrich XXIX. von Reuß vermittelte, dessen Schwester Erdmuthe Dorothea Zinzendorf geheiratet hatte. "Hier hatte sich nämlich nach Spener schem Muster eine Sondergemeinde gebildet, zu welcher die gräfliche Familie und der 'erweckte' Theil des Hofgesindes gehörte. St. übernahm die Leitung dieser 'ecclesia' im J. 1734. Vier Jahre später (1738) erlangte er in der Heimath die Ordination und wurde als Hofprediger des Grafen Reuß installirt; auch wurde ihm die Pastorirung der Dorfgemeinde und die Leitung des dortigen Waisenhauses übertragen; 1746 trat er formell in den Dienst der Brüdergemeinde über und wurde in demselben Jahre auf der Zeyster Synode zum 'Mitbischof für den lutherischen Tropus' der Gemeinde ordinirt. Im folgenden Jahre (1747) verließ St. Ebersdorf und war in verschiedenen Gemeindestationen der Brüdergemeinde in der Wetterau und Lausitz thätig; in dieses Jahr fällt auch seine Vermählung mit der durchs Loos ihm bestimmten Dor. Wilh. v. Molsberg. Aber schon 1748 löste der nüchtern angelegte und schlicht biblisch gerichtete Mann sein Verhältniß zur Brüdergemeinde, wahrscheinlich weil er die damals excentrisch-phantastische Art Zinzendorf s nicht billigen konnte" (ADB). Steinhofer löste sich unter dem Eindruck der sog. 'Sichtungszeit' ohne offenen Bruch von Herrnhut und trat in Württemberg eine Pfarrstelle als Nachfolger Oetingers an. - "St. gehört in die Reihe der großen württembergischen Schrifttheologen und steht als solcher seinem Meister Bengel am nächsten. Dabei ist seine erbauliche Schriftauslegung von der Wärme der Herzenstheologie der Brüdergemeine durchhaucht" (Realencyklopädie). - Die vorliegenden Predigten erinnern durchaus die Zinzendorfischen Predigtsammlungen, allerdings ist Steinhofers Diktion wesentlich nüchterner. - Mälzer, Württembergische Pietisten 2689 (nur für den zweiten Band in dieser Ausgabe; Angaben sind insgesamt zu korrigieren). - Realencyklopädie XVIII, 790f. - RGG4, VII, 1703f. - ADB XXXV, 726f. - BBKL X, 1303ff. - Der gute Einband des ersten Bandes etwas berieben und leicht fleckig, Schnitt mit kleinen Tintenflecken. Deutliche Lektürespuren, Bindung leicht gelockert. Vorsätze und Titel etwas angestaubt und fleckig, gelegentliche kleinere Anschmutzungen und Flekcken am Bundsteg. Ein Blatt mit Einriß, wenige Knickspuren. Insgesamt innen sauber, außen mäßig erhalten. - Frühe Ausgabe. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 1050 8° (17 x 10 cm / 16 x 9 cm).
