Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Charlotte Steiner, et al (illustrator). 1st Edition. "Best in Children's Books" was a series of 42 volumes published between 1957 and 1961. Each volume contained an excellent mixture of ten to twelve pieces, each illustrated by a different artist and taken from a variety of sources. The stories could be adapted classics, fairy tales, or new stories. There could be quite lengthy stories, or short verses. Each volume also contained some non-fiction, including a biographical piece on a famous person, and a short description of a country. Most notable about this series was the use of some excellent illustrators. This volume, number 8 in the series, includes illustrations by Maud & Miska Petersham, Susanne Suba, Leonard, Weisgard, etc. There's a very abridged version of "Gulliver's Travels"; a little tale by Charlotte Steiner (she of "The Little Train That Saved the Day"); a Thornton Burgess story; a look at Napoleon; and a visit to France. Hinges just starting to crack, but a very good copy.
