Cloth. Condition: Fair to Good. No Jacket. First Edition. 1925 Adventures of Wrangel Island written by Vilhjalmur Stefansson 1st Edition Photos & fold out Map was a Canadian Arctic explorer and ethnologist. On June 17, 1913, the HMCS Karluk set sail from Victoria, British Columbia, under the command of expedition leader Vilhjalmur Stefansson. The ship was destined for Wrangel Island, a small island in the Arctic Ocean; Stefansson?s intent was to colonize and claim the island for Great Britain. Six weeks later, the Karluk was trapped by ice. On September 20, Stefansson, accompanied by several members of the crew, left the ship for a hunting trip in order to provide enough food for the winter. Several days later a dense fog descended and the ship began to drift. When Stefansson returned, the Karluk had disappeared. The ship, which had drifted out into the Arctic Ocean, was destroyed in January 1914 when a sheet of ice smashed into its side, causing irreparable damage. Twenty-five people and 19 dogs were now stranded on the polar ice cap. After much hardship, the remaining members of the expedition made it to the relative safety of Wrangel Island. Nine months later a whaling schooner arrived to rescue them; only twelve were members of the expedition were still alive.
