This short essay is the result of long and pleasant meditations, in different continents and in different teaching assignments. Consisting of three chapters, the first depicts the beginning of the long and arduous road which American medicine had to take before it reached its splendour. The primitive medical conditions existing during the 40 years during the Dutch regime in New Netherlands are described at some length. Special attention is given to the extracurricular work of the pioneer physicians, surgeons and midwives. The second chapter describes the introduction of sound and progressive medicine in North America, partly under the influence of the medical school of Leyden in the Netherlands. The third chapter the weakness of clinical medicine in the post Boerhaavian period all over Europe is depicted as so clearly presented by the poet-scientist Goethe.
