A complete, three-volume set of the English translation of Alain-Rene Lesage's The Adventures of Gil Blas de Santillane (French: L'Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane). Translated from the original French by Tobias Smolett. Alain-Rene Lesage (1668-1747) was a French novelist and playwright. Tobias Smollett (1721-1771) was a Scottish novelist, playwright, and translator. The Adventures of Gil Blas de Santillane is a novel about the roguish hero, Gil Blas, and his adventures. Gil Blas seems an unlikely protagonist as he had a rough upbringing and constantly finds himself in the company of questionable individuals. However, Gil Blas, with his quick wit and having met so many people from different backgrounds, is adept in navigating any situation. This is a story of adventure and redemption as Gil Blas hopes to live a prosperous and successful life.
