Library name stamp on title and portrait pages. Gilt number on upper spine of volume 2 and small library stamp on lower spines of both volumes. No other library markings. Leather spine and tips are worn and frayed. Decorative marblized paper boards are rubbed and scuffed throughout, obliterating marblized design. All edges are frayed and worn through. Hinges are cracked, but text blocks are tight.Endpapers are soiled and foxed. Text has occasional foxing and soil throughout.11 illustrative plates are not present. Always carefully wrapped and shipped in cardboard boxes to protect your purchase.

Rebound in 3/4 leather with marbled boards and end-pages. Leather is soiled and rubbed, with small split to top edge of rear gutter, but with gilt on spine still bright. Binding is tight and hinges intact. Internally, a previous owners small bookplate to the inside front board but otherwise pages clean and bright. All 11 folding plates present. Overall, in very good, clean condition.

(1st edition) orig. cloth Very Good octavo xxiv + 461, xii + 523pp., frontis.(2), engraved plates., appends., In the absence of any evidence to the contrary, this appears to be a first edition, the date 1844 appearing on the title-page & the preface being dated March 1844. Boards show signs of wear & part of backstrip of volume II is partly detached (but complete). Bindings are tight & internally nice. All plates (11) called for are present. There is some light foxing of prelims o/w a nice set. Very scarce.
