Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Adler, Samuel M. (illustrator). 1st Edition. The inside of the monograph is in near-fine condition with no tears, marks, underlining, folds, or notations. 16 color plates; rest are in b/w, all printed on glossy paper. The cover of the book is shelf-worn and scratched with shelf rubbing. Monograph for 25-year retrospective of works by Samuel M. Adler at Rehn Gallery (NYC) running Oct 30 ? Nov 18, 1972. From the preface by art professor Graham Collier: ?However abstract Adler's images become, the presence of man can be discerned; a silent presence occupying a time and space beyond our rational understanding, implying the persistence of memory and the continuity of our psychological experience. Standing before his work, whether it be the small scale collages or the larger wooden sculptures, I find myself recalling the words of that ancient Egyptian who wrote in clay, ?I wish to express from my body, feelings, the words for which are not in existence.? The image forces one to the realization that the questions which have always plagued man's understanding of himself in the universe, remain, today, the same questions. That the conflict between empirical and metaphysical realities remains the same conflict; and that the problems of God, love and death remain the central problems. Adler brings us to contemplate these issues for ourselves, while at the same time revealing his own joy and pain, his optimism and his pessimism, his dreams and his perceptions. These images are rooted in the great humanist tradition. Taking advantage of the freedom gained through this century's experiments in total abstraction, this artist works in that special kind of ideationless way which allows the symbolic form of the work to be discovered rather than contrived?hence its power as a true herald of the unconscious. At the same time, and almost as a bonus, he can make exquisite use of color and create plastic harmonies which are both beautiful and expressive.? Allen S. Weller writes a helpful overview of Adler and his work: ?The career of Samuel Adler, born in New York in 1898, has followed an unusual pattern. Although he studied at the National Academy of Design at a very early age, he was equally active as a musician, and for many years he played the violin in theatre orchestras to support himself. Far more self-critical than many artists, he did not start to exhibit his paintings until the 1940's, and he was fifty before his first New York one-man show. This at once established him as an artist of great sensitivity and thoughtful power, who has made some important contributions to one of the major artistic problems of our times?the combination of deeply felt humanism with the abstract qualities that are the normal artistic language today. Adler has been an extremely successful teacher, both in New York and during many periods as a visitor on different university campuses. He has traveled widely in Europe, North Africa, and Mexico, and has found such changes in his environment a stimulating factor in artistic activities. Adler's style, thematically considered, has followed a path that has seemed inevitable to many artists of his generation. Early works were primarily concerned with the human image, developed with a compassionate sense of personality. These became more and more abstract as the artist turned to still-life motifs in which studies of form relationships and the closest and most subtle color harmonies were stressed and developed. In the late 1950's and '60's the human image re-emerged, but now with an increasingly universal quality. Adler's mature work has a content that emerges from work created by an artist who respects himself, the materials he works with, and those to whom he speaks. It introduces some unusual technical elements and recently has given totally new dimension to the collage, which he has raised to unexpectedly monumental proportions. His collages are built up with layers of fine rag papers, applied with strong glues, sometimes stroked or colored wit.
