First Edition Signed
First Edition. Octavo. Red cloth boards, lettered in gilt on spine; dustjacket; 250pp. Warmly inscribed by editor Rigney to David Meltzer (contributor to the work) and his wife: "To David & Tina Meltzer with my deep appreciation for their very real help in producing this book - Francis Rigney." Undated, but clearly contemporary with date of publication. Faint foxing to text block edges and prelims; still a straight, tight copy in slightly rubbed but wholly intact dustwrapper; Very Good. A thoroughgoing attempt, not entirely sympathetic, at a socio-psychological examination of the Beat lifestyle, by two Bay Area psychiatrists. Chapter 9 comprises a brief anthology of Beat literature, mostly poetry; this section includes 3 works ("23rd Raga / For Tina;" "14th Raga / For Donald Schenker;" and "30th/June:1959") by the inscribee David Meltzer. With much on the promiscuity, drug use, and determined anti-establishment stance of the Beats.
