Very Fine chromolithograph of a male and female spotted eagle perched on a tree limb. Julius Adolf Oskar Riesenthal (1830-1898) was a prominent engraver; Theodor Fischer, an excellent chromolithographer. One of 60 very clean hand-colored chromolithographic plates after Riesenthal by Th. Fischer. The sixty plates depict the birds in a natural setting, typically at one-third life size. Halbledereinband mit Goldprägung, Lederecken, grüner Leinenbezug, 4°, 2 Bl, 56 S., 60 Tafeln mit farbigen Chromolithographien; -Kanten leicht berieben, Wasserschaden des Deckel mit größeren Verfärbungen des Leinen und Verlust der Goldprägung, außerdem leichte Wasserwellen und Verfärbungen auf den ersten Seiten, Tafeln durchgehend in sehr gutem Zustand. Riesenthal wurde *1848 Forstlehrling in der Oberförsterei Poppelau und studierte an der Forstakademie in Neustadt-Eberswalde. Danach war er Revierförster in Bechsteinwalde in der Tucheler Heide. Er ließ sich nach Altenkirchen im Westerwald versetzen, nahm jedoch längeren Urlaub, um sein Werk *Die Raubvögel Deutschlands* zu vollenden, das zuerst 1876 erschien und mehrere Auflagen erlebte. Sein Jagdlexikon war lange Zeit ein Standardwerk auf dem Gebiet der Jagdkunde. Er wurde zum königlich-preußischen Oberförster befördert und ins Ministerium für Landwirtschaft, Domänen und Forsten nach Berlin versetzt. Auf dem Etikett der Jägermeister-Flaschen ist die erste Strophe seines Gedichts Waidmannsheil von 1880 abgedruckt, fälschlich einem *Otto von Riesenthal* zugeschrieben. [Wikipedia].
