Paperback. Condition: Near Fine. Not Stated (illustrator). A scarce and important work exploring the British section of the ancient Ravenna Cosmography. The British Section of the Ravenna Cosmography, from Archaeologia Vol. XCIII, written by I. A. Richmond and O. G. S. Crawford and read to the Society of Antiquaries, in the original paper wraps. 10 plates of photographs of sections of the three copies of the Ravenna Cosmography held at the Vatican Library, the Bibliotheque Nationale and Basle University library. Collated complete. In 1949, Sir Ian Richmond and O. G. S. Crawford published a paper they had originally submitted to Archaeologia, which suggested that the sources for the Ravenna Cosmography document had included maps or road books, and that many place names described geographical features. It was seen as a significant advance in the study both of the document and of Romano-British placenames. Sir Ian Archibald Richmond (1902-1965) was an archaeologist and academic, who wrote a highly successful book on Roman Britain. Osbert Guy Stanhope Crawford (1886-1957) was an archaeologist who specialised in prehistoric Britain and Sudan, and was the archaeological officer of the Ordnance Survey. In the original paper wraps. Externally very smart, though slightly sunned and bumped to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean. Near Fine. book.
