Condition: Fine. - Over 360 words typed on 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide creamy white paper. Clayton Yeutter, who later oversaw trade negotiations with Canada under Ronald Reagan, thanks Spiro Agnew's chief of staff Arthur Sohmer for "the gracious invitation to visit you during my tenure at the Foreign Service Institute" though he declines since Sohmer will likely be very busy with his work for the Vice Presidential candidate in the final days of the Presidential campaign. Yeutter writes of having done some "farm policy work for Mr. Nixon" earlier and comments that the campaign appears to have a comfortable lead though he's concerned about the "Wallace movement", "We can do without a third party in this country, and particularly without one that has the fascist trimmings of the American Freedom Party". Considering his later negotiations which brought about NAFTA, it is interesting that Yeutter goes on to comment on how difficult it was to intensely study Spanish for 12 to 14 hours a day while at the FSI. Signed "Clayton". Folded horizontally and vertically for mailing, else fine with the original mailing envelope bearing a Franklin D. Roosevelt U.S. postage stamp and with Sohmer's "Executive Department" address re-routed to his home. The American lawyer Clayton Yeutter (1930-2017) was a farmer who served as the U.S. trade representative under Ronald Reagan. Yeutter was involved in the multilateral trade negotiations with Uruguay which resulted in creation of the World Trade Organization. He oversaw the negotiations which led to the Canada-United States Free Trade Agreement and subsequently led to further negotiations with Mexico resulting in NAFTA. Yeutter went on to serve as Agriculture Secretary under President George H.W. Bush.

Photograph. Condition: Near fine. Signed photograph of President Ronald Reagan and the United States Ambassador to South Africa, Edward J. Perkins. Signature of Ronald Reagan is autopen. (illustrator). Signed Photograph. Framed with blue matte, measures 12" x 14". This photograph was taken in May of 1987, after a briefing in the Oval Office on the economic and political situation in South Africa. Not examined outside of frame. Dr. Edward J. Perkins (1928-2020) served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, as well as Liberia, South Africa, and Australia throughout his 25-year foreign service career. In 1986 President Ronald Reagan appointed Perkins to serve as ambassador to South Africa in hopes of fending off a congressional override to his veto of economic sanctions against the country. It was a controversial decision amidst apartheid in South Africa, and many Black leaders urged Perkins to not take the role. Perkins accepted the position and served until 1989, one year before Nelson Mandela was released from prison. He was appointed U.N. Ambassador by George H.W. Bush in 1992, serving for one year.

Paper Photograph. Condition: Near fine. White House photograph of Vice President George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush, visiting with the White House Press Secretary James Brady. Brady was permanently disabled during the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan in 1981. (illustrator). Signed Photograph. Color photograph, measures 8" x 10". Stamped with "Official Photograph / The White House / Washington" on verso, with date code below. Tape residue to verso, previously framed. Inscribed on the white matte: "To Jim Brady, With best wishes. George Bush / Thanks for coming - Barbara." A great association copy. James "Jim" Brady (1940-2014) was the White House Press Secretary under President Ronald Reagan. His life took a dramatic turn on March 30, 1981, when he was shot in the head during the attempted assassination of President Reagan. The injury left Brady partially paralyzed and with some cognitive impairment. He remained the White House Press Secretary through the Reagan administration, with others filling the position as "acting" or "deputy" Press Secretaries. As Brady recovered, he became an ardent supporter of gun control. Alongside his wife, Sarah Brady, he dedicated his life to advocating for stricter handgun laws and regulations. This advocacy led to the passage of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act in 1993, which required background checks for handgun purchases from licensed dealers. In 2000, the White House briefing room was renamed the James S. Brady Press Room in his honor.
