First edition. xxvi, 185pp. Frontis portrait, 20 plates from various sources, folding map. Blue cloth, gilt-lettered spine. Spine a bit faded. A fine copy. Scarce. One bibliographer proclaims this work as a "most elaborate of overland journals." Read was a physician who kept a detailed diary of his overland journey in 1850, published in this book for the first time along with some of his letters from that trip and a second trip to California via Panama in 1863. The folding map shows the overland route of the Jefferson-California company to California. "Read's journal begins in Independence, Missouri, on May 1, 1850. They crossed the Sierra Nevada by way of Carson Pass and arrived in Placerville on August 18. On October 18, the gold seeker followed the journal with a detailed letter back home summarizing the trip and giving a stiff warning to all about California's moral depravity" (Kurutz). [Cowan: p.523; Graff: 3431; Kurutz: 523; Mattes: 937; Mintz: 386; Wheat, Books of the California Gold Rush: 163].
