First Edition
Softcover. Condition: g- to vg. First edition. Large quarto (11 1/2 x 8 1/2"). 287pp. Original gray quarter-cloth with mounted photo-illustration with white and red lettering to front cover and numerals 1929 and No. 2 screened in red over photographic cover. Written by German modernist architects Heinz and Bodo Rasch, "Wie bauen ?" (How to Build?) was planned to become an annual edition on architecture. It became known for its radically changed concept and layout. The annual was published only twice, in 1927 and 1928. The first annual contained a foreword by Adolf Behne while the second annual triggered speculations over the publisher's choice to screen 1929 and No. 2 to the cover, concluding that it was done for commercial purposes due to the success of the first volume. This edition contains an advertisement for "Wie Bauen" Ausgabe 1929 Nr. 3 at rear, however, that volume was never published. Lavishly illustrated throughout with b/w photographic reproductions, architectural drawings and floor plans, this book is divided into an introductory part and two main parts, featuring materials in part two and constructions for industrial architecture, including an extended part on supply sources at rear. - The introductory part of this work contains basic information, e.g. the definition of industrial construction, architecture as form by design, the new techniques, architecture as traffic impediment, architecture and its lifetime, architecture as representation of tradition, its function, etc. - Part two elaborates on architectural material, e.g. stone, glass, clay, cement, magnesium, wood, paper, auxiliary machines, etc. - Part three introduces the variants of wall and frame construction. - Part four is a extensive and detailed resource guide for architectural material. Contains a descriptive list of illustrations and photographs including photo credits as well as a list of companies which have contributed with descriptive essays to the volume at rear, followed by a list of companies who have placed advertisements, mostly illustrated, in the latter part, pages 273-287, of the annual. Text in German. Binding lightly rubbed and light wear along edges. Light foxing to endpapers, light smudging at lower foredge corner of title page. Light age-toning of block. Small dealer sticker on inside front cover. Binding in overall good+, interior in very good condition.

First Edition
Softcover. Condition: g- to vg. First edition. Large quarto (11 1/2 x 8 1/4"). 176pp. Text in German. Original photo-illustrated wrappers, with white lettering to front cover. Wrappers & outer leaves a bit foxed, but internal text & photos are unaffected, exceptfor some age toning at edges in blank margins. Written by German modernist architects Heinz and Bodo Rasch, "Wie bauen ?" (How to Build?) is a monograph on the construction and furnishing of the Weißenhofsiedlung, one of the most significant architectural exhibitions of the 20th century. Held in Stuttgart in 1927, the exhibition brought together for the first time some of the most influential and progressive European designers from the early decades of the century. The central feature of the event was a development of 21 domestic buildings located on the Weißenhof hillside overlooking the city, which was visited by over 500,000 people during the summer of 1927. Lavishly illustrated throughout with numerous b/w photographic reproductions, architectural drawings and floor plans, this book is divided into an introductory part and two main parts: - The introductory part of this work contains a plan of the Weißenhof settlement, as well as a maquette, and photographs of its construction. - The first part is devoted to the various techniques of wall construction applied to the Weißenhof settlement, and contains illustrations and b/w photographic reproductions of architectural projects, completed (and under construction) homes and buildings by Trappani, Mies van der Rohe (Berlin), Heinz and Bodo Rasch (Stuttgart), Josef Frank (Vienna), Ludwig Hilberseimer (Berlin), Adolf Schneck (Stuttgart), Mart Stam (Rotterdam), Peter Behrens (Berlin), Richard Döcker (Stuttgart), Ernst May (Frankfurt), J. J. P. Oud (Rotterdam), Frank Lloyd Wright (USA), Walter Gropius (Dessau), Max Berg (Berlin), and Le Corbusier & Pierre Jeanneret (Paris). - The second and last part is devoted to framing in the construction of the Weißenhof settlement. It contains numerous b/w photographic reproductions of architectural projects, completed (and under construction) homes and buildings by Hans Poelzig (Berlin), Richard Döcker (Stuttgart), Mies van der Rohe (Berlin), Hans Scharoun (Breslau), Max Taut (Berlin), Adolf Rading (Breslau), Walter Gropius (Dessau), as well as furniture by Heinz and Bodo Rasch (Stuttgart), and Mies van der Rohe (Berlin). Wrappers rubbed and slightly creased along edges. Some foxing and age-toning to back cover. Upper corner of back cover creased, slightly affecting the upper corner of pages 167-176 (not affecting lettering). Minor age-toning along paper margin. Text in German. Wrappers in overall good-, interior in good+ to very good condition.

111, (1 w.) S. mit 140 Abb., teils in Orangerot u. Schwarz gedruckt u. 1 Bl. (Errata). OLn. (Vorderdeckel aus durchsichtigem Zelluloid). Fleischmann, Drucksachen S. 354. Dokumentations-Bibliothek VI, 91.Heidtmann 8618. Heiting/Jaeger II, 350 ff. Die Lesbarkeit der Kunst. Katalog Berlin 1999. Nr. 40. - Seltene Original-Ausgabe. - "Eine der hervorragendsten Publikationen über Werbegestaltung. . (R. Jaeger in Heiting/Jaeger).
