Barrow, Thomas; Gandert, Miguel; Harris, Alex; Logsdon, Paul; Myers, Joan; Noggle, Anne; Peck, Mary; Plossu, Bernard; Ranney, Edward; Rubenstein, Meridel; Wickstrom, Richard; Wilder, Richard (illustrator). 1st Edition. Book is clean with a square, tight binding and bright, white pages. Book and dust jacket have minor wear on the edges that is difficult to see in the scans. The Essential Landscape The New Mexico Photographic Survey with essays by J.B. lackson Combining the viewpoints of twelve photographers, this survey belongs to the great tradition of government-sponsored photo documentation that established the Rocky Mountains in the 1870s and the Great Depression of the 1930s in the American imagination. The New Mexico Photographic Survey, sponsored by the Museum of New Mexico and the National Endowment for the Arts in 1981-83, documents the state of New Mexico through a variety of individual eyes and is complemented here with a text by J. B. Jackson, the cultural geographer who has been so influential in teaching Americans to appreciate the twentieth-century landscape. This survey, unusually free of imposed structure or of didactic purpose, allowed the photographers great latitude in choice of topics and thus provides a cross section of documentary approaches to photography in the 1980s, which range from the raw and gritty pictures of Bernard Plossu and Miguel Gandert to the studied, manipulated compositions of Thomas Barrow and Meridel Rubenstein to the elegant palladium prints of Joan Myers. Working with a number of different formats, the photographers prepared exhibition prints according to their own styles. The book you see in the images is the actual book we have for sale. Hard Cover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. As new oversize hardcover in dust jacket. With 174 duotone photographs and 31 site plans and maps. Published at $45.00. "This classic book, long out of print, has now been rewritten to incorporate results from the latest archaeological excavations, discoveries about Inca masonry techniques, and updated interpretations of form and function. There are new chapters about Choquequirau, Vitcos, Chinchero, and the ruins along the famous Inca Trail. Edward Ranney s photographs convey the extraordinary accomplishments of the Inca masons-from sheer terrace walls and stairways to striking temple buildings and sculpted rock shrines-and the grandeur of their cities. John Hemming makes brilliant use of archaeological and documentary evidence to write a compelling account of each site and to offer insights and speculations on the enigmatic ruins." Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Photographer Edward Ranney (illustrator). 1st Edition. University of Illinois Press, Urbana / Canal Corridor Association, 1998. This is the Only book for sale on the Internet that is signed By The Photographer, Edward Ranney, the writer of the Prologue, Tony Hiss, and the Essayist Emily J. Harris. Only one other copy is signed by Ranney (Selling for $100.00). This is a First Edition (Number Line to 1). 216 pages, 250 photographs including 94 full-page B&W plates, numerous illustrations. From the DJ flap, " Works by the internationally recognized landscape photographer Edward Ranney are in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Modern Art in New York and other museums in the country and abroad". William Least Heat-Moon(of Blue Highways renown) wrote the epilogue for the book. Completed in 1848, the Illinois & Michigan Canal stretched from Lake Michigan at Chicago's Navy Pier to the Illinois River at LaSalle-Peru. Prairie Passage commemorates the canal's 150th anniversary with 250 stunning photographs, many by the renowned Edward Ranney, and Tony Hiss's introductory text recounts the saga of the once mighty waterway. Very Good/Very Good-. This book is very solidly bound. The covers have No soiling but have very slight sun fading at the front top edge and a narrow strip at the spine's bottom edge that has sun faded to tan from blue. The interior pages appear flawless. No sun yellowing. No markings or writing. No creases or tears. The DJ is Very Good- due to two tears, one at the top front edge(1 1/2 inches) and one at the rear bottom edge(3/4's of an inch). There is also a light crease above 'Prairie Passage' on the the front. The Dj is quite clean and once it is placed in a protective cover it should present fairly well but the front cover tear will likely still be visible. Also, as you can see from some of the scanned photos this 9 by 12 inch book is large, larger than the scanner surface. I tried to provide pictures with the imperfections noted above. Signed by Author(s).
