Book
Originalhardcover. Condition: Gut. 481 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - slightly rubbed otherwise perfect condition - The 800 years between the first Roman conquests and the conquest of Islam saw a rich, constantly shifting blend of languages and writing systems, legal structures, religious practices and beliefs in the Near East. While the different ethnic groups and cultural forms often clashed with each other, adaptation was as much a characteristic of the region as conflict. This volume, emphasising the inscriptions in many languages from the Near East, brings together mutually informative studies by scholars in diverse fields. Together, they reveal how the different languages, peoples and cultures interacted, competed with, tried to ignore or were influenced by each other, and how their relationships evolved over time. The volume will be of great value to those interested in Greek and Roman history, Jewish history and Near Eastern studies. -- Introduction: documentary evidence, social realities and the history of language -- Fergus Millar -- THE LANGUAGE OF POWER: LATIN IN THE ROMAN NEAR EAST -- The presence, role and significance of Latin in the epigraphy and culture of the Roman Near East Werner Eck -- Latin in cities of the Roman Near East -- Benjamin Isaac -- SOCIAL AND LEGAL INSTITUTIONS AS REFLECTED IN THE DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE -- Euergetism in Josephus and the epigraphic culture of first-century Jerusalem -- Seth Schwartz -- Legal and social status of threptoi and related categories in narrative and documentary sources -- Marijana Riel -- Ritual performances of divine justice: the epigraphy of confession, atonement, and exaltation in Roman Asia Minor -- Angelos Chaniotis -- Continuity of Nabataean law in the Petra papyri: a methodological exercise -- Hannah M. First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st edition. 1st edition, 1913. A Very Good- copy. 8vo., 212 pp., bound in decorated brown cloth. Ex-library with all faults. From The Sondley Reference Library in Asheville, NC and signed by F.A. Sondley inside front cover. Cloth is soiled with a sun faded spine. Some rubbing to tips and edges. Text edges are dusty. Text is clean and unmarked. Binding is solid. Author was teaching but between lessons wrote a suffrage novel [entitled The Closed Door], published it at her own expense, travelled, sold copies to pay her expenses, and made speeches all through the state, often going into North Carolina and Virginia." Price modeled The Closed Door on her own suffrage activities. Mary Porter, the main character in the novel, was a supporter and fighter for woman's rights in eastern Tennessee. She started a local league and became an organizer for the state association. She distributed literature, spoke at public forums, and mobilized women to advocate for equal suffrage. The book ended with the following: ".I can truly say, I thank God I am a woman." F.A.Sondley: Forster Alexander Sondley, attorney and scholar, was born at Montrealla, his maternal grandfather's home in Alexander, a community ten miles north of Asheville. As an adult he most often referred to himself as F. A. Sondley. A lawyer. Historian, and collector of art, he is chiefly remembered for his personal library of approximately 30,000 volumes containing hundreds of rare works on southern and state history and on natural history. The city of Asheville acquired the library by bequest at his death, and parts of it still form the nucleus of the Sondley Reference Library in Asheville.
