CONDITION: BOOK: As New. DUST JACKET: Repaired; Lightly Creased; Moderately Chipped; In Archival Quality Jacket Cover. SYNOPSIS: In Baroque Europe the Prince was virtually a god. Court life was centred on the cult of the ruler, whether he held the reins of power over all Europe, or was a petty princeling of some minor duchy. Yet these gods had to live out the lives of ordinary men, with their pleasures and pastimes, and with the simple functions of life, all of which had to be performed with due ritual and with the court as witness. The arts of the period reflect this conflict, and are here used with a wealth of colour and black-and-white illustrations to help bring into focus the lives of the European princes at their courts. H. D. Molesworth, who has a deep knowledge of all the arts and of the intellectual and social background of the period, vividly shows the rulers of Europe as gods and as men. He explains the mystique of the court, the people who made it up, the elaborate and theatrical settings within which the ritual was performed, and touches on the mysteries of court etiquette. He shows the prince with the people to whom he was closest - his wife and children - his mistresses - his favourites and advisers, and the envoys from other courts. The prince's function in the government of his lands is explained, and finally his pastimes and pleasures. Far from being irrelevant to our world today, the hierarchy of the courts is shown to point to the origin not only of the organisation of modern big business, but also of many of our social customs and institutions of both sides of the Atlantic. H. D. Molesworth was formerly Keeper of the Departments of Sculpture and Furniture at the Victoria and Albert Museum. He has travelled widely in Europe and Africa, and is the author of a number of books on European Sculpture. He has made a number of special journeys to Europe, revisiting palaces and museums, while preparing The Golden Age of Princes. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. Finlay, Virgil (cover) (illustrator). 1st Edition. Evanston, IL: Clark Publishing Company, 1954. Cover by Virgil Finlay. The October, 1954 issue of Fate Magazine (issue no. 55) in Raymond A. Palmer's now-legendary paranormal-reporting non-fiction enterprise, which began with, in its first issue, Kenneth Arnold's cover account of flying crescents which "skipped like saucers across a pond", an event which, for whatever reason, kicked off the modern era of UFO events. After that, Fate introduced countless events which remain, to this day, fodder for paranormal documentaries and investigation. 12mo, illustrated perfect-bound wraps, 130 pp. Near Fine, with a faint small-scale crease at top right of the front cover (see scan), which also faintly creases the first few page corners; micro-wear at a couple other points (see scan). High Grade, particularly for a periodical which often shows substantial wear from use. See scans. This issue features an entire section on Animal ESP, as well as articles on Precognition; Freakish Coincidence; Spontaneous Human Combustion; Ghosts; Psychic Healing; Race of Dwarves; Poltergeist, and much else, including the standard Departments, always engrossing in themselves. The great Virgil Finlay executed the titillating cover, which is also reproduced within, in black and white, in the subject article. Other interior art is largely uncredited or photographic. A piece of paranormal history, and an example of a unique branch of Americana, in very highly collectible condition. l48n.

Original Printed Wrappers. Condition: Very Good. Walter L. Huber, Ansel E. Adams, Lee L. Stopple, Charles E. Townsend, J.N. LeConte, Robert L. Lipman, J.E. Haynes, Marion Randall Parsons, Fred Herz, E. L. Macaulay, Bayard H. Jones, C.O. Schneider (illustrator). First Edition. San Francisco: Sierra Club, 1926. First Edition. Vol XII, No. 3, for 1926. This was published during a several-year time period when the Sierra Club did not stipulate the month of an issue, just the volume, the number, and the year monthly designations for such an infrequent publication having always been somewhat unnecessary in any case. Original printed wrappers, 9 1/4" x 6 1/4", 120 pp. + unpaginated photographic plates and ads, including hachure maps of Yosemite Valley and Kings River Canon (canyon), and a fold-out with bi-scale elevations of the same two locales. also, a plate with an illustration of the 14' tall monument, of galvanized iron with a brass base, installed at the top Mount Shasta in 1875 (destroyed by lightning in 1905). Very Good plus, really quite close to near fine; the major flaw being the common one that circuit binding (yapp binding) was used, in which cover edges were intentionally extended out beyond page edges, but over time the extended part becomes pressed inward somewhat (see scan). Early owner's signature at top of contents page. Otherwise, just occasional very small points of cover wear. A very handsome copy. See scans. Binding sturdy, contents fine. See scan of contents page for the lineup of stellar club writers and their always engaging and adventurous topics. In addition to the graphics mentioned above, this issue is chock full of photographic plates by the club's best photographers, as well as others. Six very early Ansel Adams shots headline those, but there are also one or more shots each by Walter L. Huber, Ansel E. Adams, Lee L. Stopple, Charles E. Townsend, J.N. LeConte, Robert L. Lipman, J.E. Haynes, Marion Randall Parsons, Fred Herz, E. L. Macaulay, Bayard H. Jones, C.O. Schneider, and several uncredited shutter artists. SC2.
