Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First Edition. pp132.28 colour plates. Fine in navy blue cloth boards with titles in silver.Near Fine illustrated slipcase with slight shelf wear. Translated from a Bohemian manuscript in the British Library, with introduction and commentary on the plates by Josef Krása. Note: The actual text of Sir John Mandeville's Travels is not included in this book only the illustrations. Sir John Mandeville is most probably the pseudonym of a physician from Liège called variously Jean de Bourgogne,or Jean à la Barbe. On his deathbed he is supposed to have claimed to be "Lord Jean de Mandeville, knight, Count de Montfort in England and lord of the Isle of Campdi and the Château Pérouse". Having killed a man in his own country, he claimed, he had travelled the world, become a great naturalist, philosopher and physician and arrived at Liège in 1343. Be that as it may, and his real identity has been much disputed, the travelogue first appeared in French in about 1356. Although many of the references to travels in places like China and Asia were clearly lifted from other sources, the parts relating to travel and residence in Egypt and the Holy land are more likely to be drawn from first hand experience. It became one of the most widely copied and translated texts throughout the 15th and 16th centuries.
