First Edition
First edition (not stated but with publisher's corresponding dates on both title and copyright pages). 134 pages. Hardcover; H 20.75cm x L 13cm. Lacks dust jacket. Dark orange boards lightly soiled with light wear at corners, shallow chipping at spine head with heel worn even with text block's bottom edge, spine's rubbed surface paper re-adhered to underlying backstrip with peeling still slightly evident lengthwise along rear joint. Foxing to front and rear endpapers; past owner's ink signature on front free endpaper; half title page and rear flyleaf verso well toned. Interior pages remain clean and binding is firm. A good copy of a very uncommon book by the scion of a famous Greenville, Mississippi planter family. Text divided into three sections titled as "Siciliana," "Lyrical Pieces," and "From a Soldier's Notebook" with the book's namesake play-poem featured on pages 15-58 followed by with forty-six other poems. IN APRIL ONCE was Percy's second book following SAPPHO AND LEVKAS AND OTHER POEMS (Yale, 1915) and enjoyed moderate success with second and third editions published by Yale in 1925 and 1928 respectively. Percy is most famous for his 1941 book LANTERNS ON THE LEVEE which features his reminiscences of student days at Harvard and of life in Greenville and the Mississippi Delta spiced with impressions of Yankees and reflections upon race relations in the South. William Alexander Percy (1885-1942) was grand-uncle of novelist and essayist Walker Percy. {PoetryShelf#3}.
