Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. ### Voyages of Elizabethan Seamen by Edward John Payne 1907 ### ## Select narratives from the ?Principal Navigations; of Hakluyt. ## ## THIS BOOK: Classified as VERY GOOD. This is the 1907 EDITION: Original versions published 1880, second 1893, 1900, condensed into this edition 1907. There is minor bumping and shelfmarks. The book is in very good condition and the text is clear. Previously owned by Fettes College with a stamp inside cover and signature.## ### Mr Froude has happily characterised the ?Principle Navigations? of Hakluyt as ?the prose epic of modern English nation.? This labours contrasts amusingly, with an opinion once put forth by eminent Professor of Modern history in the sister University. Professor Smyth accounted the ?Principle Navigations? nothing but an unwieldly, an unsightly mass, only likely to be Burrowed into by a few spectacular persons, bent upon tracing out the steps which lead to permanent alteration, and improvements in the concerns of mankind. Only the mere lover of old books were to deny that Hekluyt blackletter folio's are both unwieldly and unsightly. But no one who knows them will consent to dismiss them as containing nothing but raw material for the use of the philosopher. They contain episodes which are integral parts of our national history-episodes to which the English reader cannot but recur again and again, with an emotion akin to that which a Greek maybe supposed to have felt when listening to the exploits of Homeric heroes.## ### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note.
