[From the dust jacket flaps] One November day in 1942, a tall, skinny kid asked Red Fay if he could join the touch football game at a PT boat training base in Rhode Island. Fay reluctantly agreed, unloaded the new player on the opposing team, and spent the rest of the afternoon dodging his elbows, knees and shoulders. Next morning, when Fay reported for boat-handling drill, the instructor was the same skinny kid, in the uniform of a lieutenant, junior grade?John F. Kennedy. Before the morning was over, Fay jumped aboard the wrong boat and the irritated Kennedy told him that the Navy?and the Allied Forces?might get along better without him. This was an overstatement, and in 1961 JFK appointed Fay Under Secretary of the Navy. For twenty-one years the Fay-Kennedy friendship continued, on the basis of mutual respect and a great many laughs, and the shared experiences of their young manhood established the easy intimacy of the relationship. At the family Christmas in Palm Beach; in hospital rooms; on the golf course; at JFK's bachelor dinner; in his Congressional campaign and in the White House years, Fay was around, listening, joking, sometimes advising. In The Pleasure of His Company, Fay delivers just what the title promises : the marvelous fun of being with JFK in his least formal, most unguarded moments. Back in the Pacific in 1943 ?before Jack Kennedy ever planned to go into politics?Fay and his buddy Barney Ross had made book that Kennedy would one day be President of the United States. The singular qualities that Fay saw then are what, through these pages, we see now. He offers a unique portrait, in which we find not only the working President but, with intense vividness, the young man whose smile and glint of irony, quick turn of the head and way of moving enhanced the sense of life in all of us.
