Hard Back. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. 434 Pages plus 12 Un-numbered Pages of New Publications, Books for Clergyman, Book Notices, Criticisms, and Our Book Table. This book is #3 in the Chautauqua Girls series. Green boards with impressed decorations on front and spine some in gold. A tight book with no marks or stamps and in remarkably good condition for an 1879 book now over 130 years old. In her lifetime, Isabella MacDonald Alden, Grace Livingston Hill's aunt, was usually published under the pseudonym Pansy. They are heartwarming stories of faith and love and each book is set in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Grace Livingston Hill's books are similar in style and tone to the Pansy books. Frontispiece is a black and white illustration "He has made everything beautiful in his time." She stood in the hall, waiting. She heard the thud of trunks and valises on the pavement outside. She heard her father's voice giving orders to driver and porter. She wondered why she did not step forward and open the door. How would other girls greet their mothers? When a stepmother and sister are suddenly thrust upon Ruth, she resolved to bear it with dignity for her father's sake. But their uncultured ways, lack of taste, and shocking grammar try Ruth's patience sorely. Then, when tragedy strikes her beloved father, it seems as if her cross is too much to bear. Ruth knows that Jesus promised his children rest, and she assumes that he meant in heaven. But could he have intended it for here? Will he bear her crosses even now?.

Hard Cover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. 1st Edition. Second Printing. Publisher's full green Victorian cloth, reverse gilt lettering and embossed decoration on spine and cover. Isabella Macdonald Alden (1841 1930) was an American author. From 1865 to 1929, Alden published about 100 books. Most of her works are didactic fiction with religious principles, which concentrate on translating Biblical precepts into acceptable Christian behavior in a modern world. Several of her books, such as her most popular work Ester Ried, were based on personal experiences. "Ester endured life as a half-hearted Christian, unhappily going through the motions of her housework. "O, Ester was asleep! She went to church on the Sabbath, and to preparatory lecture on a week day; she read a few verses in her Bible, frequently, not every day; she knelt at her bedside every night, and said a few words of prayer and this was all!" She traveled to New York and was excited to be in her cousin s wedding. Abbie, a strong Christian, brought much reflection into Ester s life. "Ester saw with wide, open eyes, and thoroughly awakened soul, that there was a something in this Christian religion that Abbie had and she had not." This popular story by Pansy illustrates Ester s journey to become a stronger, more committed Christian." "Probably no writer of stories for young people has been so popular or had so wide an audience as Mrs. G. R. Alden, whose pen-name, "Pansy," is known wherever English books are read." Rev. Francis E. Clark in World Wide Endeavor, 1895 . Covers rubbed, gilt mildly faded, former owner's name on fep, brief gift inscription on ffep (dated November 1st, 1874), otherwise unmarked, else very good.
