Some minor edge wear and a grubby mark near the head of the spine but overall very good plus. Signed by the author to the title page. Also contains the case against Adolph Esmit Governor of St. Thomas 1682 - 1684 harborer of pirates. On July 30, 1683, the British frigate, H.M.S. Francis, commanded by Captain Charles Carlile, searching for the notorious French pirate ship La Trompeuse came upon the vessel in the harbour of St. Thomas. Next evening, Carlile entered the port with 2 small boats and 14 men, boarded the vessel, and set the pirate on fire. When she blew up, vibrations rocked not only (sic) the harbour of St. Thomas, but the chancellories of England, Denmark, and France. The incident highlighted a prominent part played by St. Thomas and its Governor, Adolph Esmit, in harboring and abetting piracy at the latter end of the 17th century. From the front flap. The third phase tells the tragic tale ofGabriel Milan who succeeded Adolph Esmit as Governor of St. Thomas from 1684-1687. The author is of Norwegian descent but native of the Virgin Islands where this tale is set. The jacket will be covered with an archival quality, inert removable protective sleeve.
