1p, 12mo. In fair condition, on aged paper, with thin strip of paper from mount adhering to reverse of second leaf of bifolium. Reads: 'Mr. Paget regrets that an engagement for the Evening of February 4th. prevents his having he honour of accepting the Invitation of the President, Vice-Presidents and Council of the Hunterian Society'. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.

3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. After thanking him for his 'last (and other) kind letters', he continues: 'After some hesitation (smile?) I have made up my mind to keep my engagement tomorrow to dine with the Imperial Federationists at the Freemason's Tavern. Therefore I shoud be very glad if you could if it can be managed by Lydia [i.e. Sir James's wife] without great inconvenience find me a bed for tomorrow Saturday night.' It 'goes against' his 'cooler judgment to take the journey only for the aforesaid dinner', and seeing them all in Harewood Place 'will be an (additional) pleasure making the journey more reasonable'. 1 1/2 Pages, Hanover Square, W. July 24, 1879. Written entirely in Paget's hand in the third person, "Sir James Paget presents his compliments to Messrs. Strahan and Company and thanks them heartily for the copies of 'The Alcohol Question' which they are so good as to have sent him. He begs them to believe that with these and the many numbers of their journals which they have kindly sent him he has ben more than remunerated for his contribution." Paget, an English physician was co-founder of the science of pathology, physician to Queen Victoria, and discovered in 1834 Trichinella Spiralis, the cause of trichinosis, specialized in tumors and diseases of bones and joints, first to advocate enucleation of tumors, described in 1877 osteitis deforman, later called Paget's disease, etc. etc.
