Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition ( 'First Published 1927' ). You can see the blue covers in the photos. You wouldn't guess they began their life in 1927. There's hardly any soiling. The gilt lettering on the spine is very bright. There is a little crinkling at the spine ends. All six edges are in excellent shape. The corners have only tiny spots of rubbing. There's a little crease off the top edge of the rear cover. The book is quite decently bound. I'm not finding any cracks or spaces between any of the facing pages. The covers are tightly bound. The top page edge looks clean. The middle and bottom page edges are deckled or rough-cut. I like the look and feel of a book with rough-cut edges. There is one instance where a bit of the paper from one page got pulled over from the facing page, not an issue with regard to the print. The pages are quite clean throughout. There are a few tan specks on the title page, and then a few tan spots on some of the early poems, we are talking about very minor foxing, then it goes away entirely over the next 50 or so pages, perfectly clean pages, then there are two little spots on one page, one on another, half dozen pages with one tan spot off the bottom edge, not much more than that, comfortable stating that these are very clean pages in very nice shape. I'm not really seeing any creasing of note, no turned-down corners or placeholder creases. No markings anywhere. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The inside covers an end papers look good. The Table Of Contents at the front of the book lists all the poems and poets. At the end of the book there is an alphabetical list of the poets, very unimpressive group, Blake, Browning, the other Browning, Byron, Chaucer, Coleridge, Donne, Dryden, Keats, Longfellow, Milton, Poe, Pope, Shakespeare, Shelley, Spencer, Swinburne, Tennyson, Whitman, Wordsworth. And quite a few others. I wouldn't bother. From the Editor's Preface: 'While I was in an English house on the Riviera I spent most of my time in an excellent library which contained a remarkable number of books on English literature, and particularly on poetry. Several shelves were filled with anthologies of different kinds and compiled at different times, but I noticed that there were none which dealt with those poems inspired by music, or with the idea of music in them. This volume is an attempt to fill the gap.' From the introduction by I. J. Paderewski: 'I believe that this anthology may be destined to have in some degree of beneficial effect. It contains poems, sentences or thoughts on or about music by the great masters of English who helped to build up the wealth and beauty of this wonderful language. It proves the love and respect professed by immortal Englishmen for the great art of music. It will perhaps influence and change the minds of some among those who, so far, have remained indifferent, if not distinctly hostile, to that particular form of art, and it may please both gods and men to see the doors of the temple open by a pure young hand.'.
