Marbled decorated paper cover, bookblock loose. Origininally published in 1614 as 'A wife, now a widowe'. Also issued as part of 'A collection of the best English poetry by several hands', 1717.Written by Sir Thomas Overbury (1581-1613). He was an English poet and essayist and victim of an infamous intrigue at the court of James I. His poem A Wife, thought by some to have played a role in precipitating his murder, became widely popular after his death and the brief portraits added to later editions established his reputation as a character writer. The poem describes the virtues that a young man should demand of a woman. It was interpreted as an indirect attack on Lady Essex who wanted to marry Carr, Viscount Rochester. Her powerful relatives tried to maneuver Overbury out of the way by having him appointed to diplomatic missions overseas, but he refused to go and was imprisoned in the Tower of London on a charge of treason. Overbury was slowly poisened to death. Three months after Overbury died, Rochester, now Earl of Somerset, married Lady Essex. Two years passed before public suspicions were aroused over what had taken place, but then investigations were undertaken and the participants in Overbury s murder were put on trial. Four accomplices in the murder were convicted and executed; the Earl and Countess of Somerset were also convicted but were pardoned by the king.Overbury sA Wifewas published in 1614 and went through several editions within a year because of the publicity aroused by Overbury s death. Its real literary value lies in theCharacters, ultimately 82, that were added to the second and subsequent editions. These prose portraits of Jacobean types, drawn with wit and satire, give a vivid picture of contemporary society and are important as a step in the development of the essay. Several were by Overbury, but most were contributed by John Webster, Thomas Dekker and John Donne. This is the seventeenth edition.

Full Leather. Condition: VG+ for Age. 'Tenth edition'. xxiii (t.p. and Memoirs)+20 (Elegies - all just initialled but one 'W.S.' is not by Shakespeare but either Williams Strachey or Stradley)+252; clean, tight, unmarked and undamaged but patch of light-moderate tanning spreading from centre outer margin for much of text, also on pastedown margins as is common to books of this period being off-set from adhesive, no half-title; leather covers generally clean, edges darker than centre, double-ruled gilt marginal lines, edges and corners all rubbed, spine lighter but leather contiguous with covers, good small gilt-on-red title label. Includes his 'Characters' (his best known work, now well known to psychologists interested in the history of persoanlity studies) and The Wife, his best known poem (with numerous poems in praise of it preceding the text). Apparently extremely scarce, despite being a 'tenth edition' no others with same title on Bookfinder at time of listing prior to 19th cent. We cannot enter here into the sad tale of the author's short career which ended with him being poisoned in the Tower of London probably at James I's behest. The text does appear virtually identical to that of the 1614 2nd edition of The Wife which included the Characters, but does not include The Remedy of Love or Observations in Foreign Travels, but does end (p.239 -252) with a section entitled 'News from any whence, or Old Truth, under a supposal of Novelty' which consists of brief light pieces, many ostensibly from foreign locations such as France, Spain and Venice and others from Court, The Church' and 'The Bed' etc. One of these, from France, is dated 1616 which must be either in jest or not by Overbury. My thanks to Prof. Emma Smith for clarifying the 'W.S.'point.

Light toning to interior, very light foxing and soiling to a few leaves, trimming close to margins and affecting text of headline in a few places, no loss to legibility. An appealing copy. $650. * Later edition. First published in 1614 after being circulated in manuscript during his lifetime, Overbury's poem A Wife discusses the ideal virtues a man should demand of a prospective wife. It was written in response to what he deemed to be a rash marriage by a friend, Robert Carr, who intended to marry a woman from a powerful and influential family. The poem and the subsequent backlash caused so much intrigue that James I tried to remove Overbury from court by offering him an ambassadorship; Overbury refused and was imprisoned in the Tower of London, where he died. An investigation into the circumstances of his death led by Coke and Bacon concluded that he had been poisoned and that James had been aware of the murder. English Short-Title Catalogue S113550.

Small 8vo., 160 leaves, unpaginated; a few scribbles on the title-page, some worming to lower blank margin at the beginning and in sheets N-O, torn corners C1 and K2 without loss, short tears just entering text on H1 and M1-2 without loss, and a few short marginal tears; an unsophisticated copy in original unlettered sheep, slightly shaken, corners worn and some erosion to leather on covers; later ownership inscription of John Baghott de la Bere of Trinity College Oxford, 1754.Sixteenth edition of the most popular character book of the early seventeenth century. Sir Thomas Overbury's poem, A Wife, now a Widowe, based on Ovid, was published posthumously, in 1614. The second edition, also 1614, adds some pieces in prose including twenty-one characters. The collection finally reached eighty-three characters by 1622, describing, among others, a good wife, a dissembler, a courtier, a flatterer, a sailor, an amorist, a 'wideman', a pedant, etc. The authors of these added characters included Webster, Dekker, Donne ('The true Character of a Dunce'), and others. Donne's contributions also included 'An Essay of Valour' and 'Newes from the very Country', one of the satirical newsletters at the end.Sir Thomas Overbury (1581-1613) was a celebrated victim of court intrigue. A friend and adviser of James I's favourite Robert Carr, Viscount Rochester, he fell out with Rochester by opposing his liaison with Frances, Countess of Essex. Rochester turned the King against Overbury and contrived to have him imprisoned in the Tower, where he was slowly poisoned to death. The notoriety of the whole affair no doubt contributed to the popularity of Overbury's Wife and its gradual accretions. The five small quarto editions that appeared in 1614 have always been difficult to find, but even the octavo editions from the 1620s and 1630s have now become elusive. This was the last edition to be printed before the Civil War and a change in literary fashion brought Overbury's star low. There were scattered later printings 1655, 1664 and 1709.STC 18919; Gwendolen Murphy, 'A Bibliography of English Character Books', Supplement to the Bibliographical Society's Transactions no. 4 (1925), p. 24.
