May include a first or last copied page. VG. From the introduction: "The story of the Andes and the great river to which this mountain-chain gives birth has never been better told than in Orton's THE ANDES AND THE AMAZON, from which we select the following description of Chimborazo and its mountain neighbors. James Orton, born at Seneca Falls, NY, in 1880, became a congregationalist clergyman, and in 1867 headed an exploring expedition to South America. In 1873, he sought that continent again, and died on Lake Titicaca, September 24, 1877.".

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. Written by James Orton, a Professor of Natural History at Vassar College in New York State, The Andes and the Amazon, or Across the Continent of South America tells the tale of the author's exploration of the continent in 1867. Now republished by Forgotten Book, this book provides the reader with one man's take on South America and its people. The book opens with a brief introduction, which states, "In this century one can almost count upon his hand the travelers who have written of their journeys in this unknown region." The book is divided into chapters, each of which focuses on a different facet of South America. There are chapters on the city and people of Guayaquil, an account of climbing the Andes, the country of Ecuador and in particular Quito, traversing the Amazon and the fantastic wildlife of the great river, and more. The book concludes with a brief guide for readers on how to travel in South America, including the most popular routes and the necessary precautions to take. The Andes and the Amazon is clearly a product of a specific time period. The author and his attitudes can occasionally be interpreted as racist. Orton's tone not withstanding, this is an interesting account of an early exploration of South America. The author does an admirable job describing the flora and fauna of the region, and certainly respects the beautiful natural terrain of the continent. print-on-demand item.
