First Printing of the First US Edition. A Very Good copy with age darkening to the spine and board edges. No dust jacket. Illustrated. In 1858, Colonel Steptoe led a detachment of 164 soldiers to the Washington Territory to engage local tribes but during what is called the Spokane Coeur d'Alene Paloos War, a combined force of about 1,000 Coeur d Alenes, Spokanes, and Palouses attacked and defeated Steptoe at the Battle of Pine Creek. The battle, and the subsequent (successful) retreat, is also known as "the Steptoe Disaster." Author Manning has written a fine history of this event and circumstances that led up to it.
