Hardcover. First edition. Signed by the author on a tipped-in sheet. A "grab-bag of a book," containing almost 100 pieces on a multiplicity of subjects. Here, Nordlinger visits unusual towns, universities, even music camps. He delves into politics, then profiles a number of personalities: George W. Bush, Condoleezza Rice, Naguib Mahfouz, Al Sharpton, Donald Rumsfeld, Rosie O'Donnell, Rodney Dangerfield and more. He sends dispatches from Europe, East and West, and the Middle East. He writes on a favorite sport, golf, and a favorite art: music. We meet Tiger Woods, Ben Hogan, Luciano Pararotti, Meredith Willson (the composer of The Music Man) and many others. 505 pages with index. A tight nearly fine copy in a nearly fine dust jacket.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. viii, 459, [5] pages. Illustrations. A Note on Sources. List of Nobel Peace Laureates. Index. DJ has black mark on rear flap. Inscribed by the author on the page facing the title page. Jay Nordlinger is an American journalist. He is a senior editor of National Review, the conservative magazine founded by William F. Buckley, Jr. This was inscribed by the author to Thomas Poole Griesa (October 11, 1930 - December 24, 2017). He was a United States District Judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. He received his commission on June 30, 1972. He served as chief judge from 1993 to 2000 and assumed senior status on March 13, 2000. In 1978, Griesa issued an order holding United States Attorney General Griffin Bell in contempt of court for Bell's refusal to turn over FBI records about eighteen "informants" in the Socialist Workers Party. This was the first time that a U.S. Attorney General had been held in contempt for conduct during pretrial proceedings. In 2014, Griesa presided over the Argentine debt restructuring. In this book, Jay Nordlinger gives a history of what the subtitle calls "the most famous and controversial prize in the world." The Nobel Peace Prize, like the other Nobel prizes, began in 1901. So we have a neat, sweeping history of the 20th century, and about a decade beyond. The Nobel prize involves a first world war, a second world war, a cold war, a terror war, and more. It contends with many of the key issues of modern times, and of life itself. It also presents a parade of interesting people--more than a hundred laureates. Some of these laureates have been historic statesmen, such as Roosevelt and Mandela. Some have been heroes or saints, such as Martin Luther King and Mother Teresa. Controversies also swirl around the awards to Kissinger, Gorbachev, Gore, and Obama, to name just a handful. Probably no figure in this book is more interesting than a non-laureate: Alfred Nobel, the Swedish scientist and entrepreneur who started the prizes. Peace, They Say is enlightening and enriching. It has its opinions, but it also provides what is necessary for readers to form their own opinions. All these people who have been crowned "champions of peace," and the world's foremost--should they have been? First American Edition [stated], 1st Printing [stated].
