Soft cover. Condition: New. New condition glossy color illustrated softcover wraps. Includes List of Other Books by Louise K. Nelson; Author Dedication; Introduction; and About the Author. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs. Signed (with the sentiment "Best Wishes"), by the author with black pen at the lower section of the title page. "I was inspired to write this book, Country Folklore.and That's the Way It Was, by my family. My mother and my uncle lived until they were in their late 80s and early 90s. My uncle could remember all the ways of country living in the 1920s and 1930s. In reminiscing with them and my family, I tried to capture all these ways of living. I first wrote a book "Country Living With Grandpa" in his own language. My grandparents had no schooling and their language was typical in this era of life. By living with my mother, my siblings, my uncle and my grandparents this book is very real and has touched many people. My grandparents were very poor tenant farmers, but this didn't hinder them from making a good living. They learned to save, preserve and can fruits and vegetables and to make our clothes from feed and flour saks. We learned to cope with life by sharing and loving each other, by doing extra work to have the food and clothes we needed and to be happy. I can't say we were unhappy to live in this time of life because we weren't. This is the way all the farmers lived. After the one-room school closed, we went to better schools and became educated. Then we were ready to move on with the changes of the world, but this didn't stop us from the happy memories of living our early lives in the 1920s and 1930s. So many of you lived this same way and have told me how you enjoyed the writings of early farm life that I've had in the local paper. After countless requests, I have put these in book form so that our grandchildren and great grandchildren will be able to see just how life was as we grew up." - Louise K. Nelson, from the Introduction. Signed by Author(s).
Published by Lillabulero, Chapel Hill, 1974
First Edition
Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First edition. Sold here together are the fourteen issues (in thirteen volumes) comprising the complete set of Lillabulero, an arts and literature periodical that was the brain child of a young Russell Banks. The format of the first series (the first five issues) varied somewhat, but were all printed on tall side-stapled wrappers whose covers extended out beyond the text block of the interior pages. Later, in the second series (the final 9 issues) the format changed to a more traditional trade paperbound look. Condition varies somewhat, but all are in at least very good condition. The extended or "yapped" cover edges in the first series of issues are somewhat worn and slightly torn as often seen. Individual issues are available in the secondhand marketplace, but complete sets are uncommon.

Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Fair. Arthur B. Davies; K.R. Chamberlain; Boardman Robinson; Arthur Young; Maurice Sterne; Cornelia Barns (illustrator). 1st Edition. New York: The Masses Publishing Company, 1917. The April, 1917 issue (Volume IX, Number 6, whole number 70). Quarto, illustrated stapled wraps, 42 pp.; this is a scarce survivor of the smaller-format issues (i.e., no longer folio size) which were issued late in the life The Masses. 1917 was the last year of publication, and by the time of this issue, there were only months left. Just Fair, due to the absence of the front cover and the separation of the first page from the remaining textblock with rear cover - all of which is itself in Very Good condition, by any periodical standard. As the very inexpensively-produced budget-of-the-heart icon The Masses was, it no doubt deserves its own grading standard, but there is none such. Some small scale chipping on page 3 and rear cover, modest toning to the remarkably healthy contents. See scans. Certainly one of the most seminal socio-political American publications of the last 200 years, The Masses was a collection of ideological art, opinion and reporting - usually contributed with little or no compensation - which strongly represented socialist / marxist values, but in a larger sense was representative of labor, women's rights, and radical left issues in general as those were at that time. Famous names of the era often contributed work, but the names of the regulars are themselves all now in history books. The now-timeless publication was officially shut down by the U.S. Government in 1918, ostensibly on the basis of postal regulations (though it had already suspended publication in late 1917), following two intense and ideologically-charged trials. Eastman and his sister, Crystal, then started The Liberator to carry on; after The Liberator closed its doors in 1926, The New Masses, under the primary leadership of Mike Gold, carried the radical flag. The Masses, as the first, is also the rarest. Text contributors to this issue of April, 1917 included Eastman, John Reed; Louise Bryant; Floyd Dell; Howard Brubaker; Robert Hillyer; Louis Untermeyer; Hutchins Hapgood; Ruza Wenclaw; Leslie Nelson Jennings; Robert H. Lowie; Charles W. Wood; Jane Whitaker; Anne Arnold; Henry Reich, Jr.; Dorothea Gay; Franklin Van Wert; David Rosenthal; Elizabeth Fox; and Nina Bull. Art was contributed by Arthur B. Davies; K.R. Chamberlain; Boardman Robinson; Arthur Young; Maurice Sterne; and Cornelia Barns. Check out all of these names. An extraordinarily rare piece of American publishing and political history.
