[title continues] With an impartial relation of the most remarkable transactions relating to his life. -- Epistle by George Whitehead; contents : 136 books, epistles and papers by Nayler; list of 23 controversial books (1655-1656) omitted; advts., 8 p.; errata at foot of p. 770. Provenance: Rossendale Meeting. -- `In June 1655, when Nayler traveled to London to support the mission of Edward Burrough and Francis Howgill, he developed a high reputation as a preacher. During the summer of 1656, questions of leadership and the right to judge the actions of other Friends came to a head. .George Fox was then in prison, and leading London Friends decided that Nayler must be taken to see him. The meeting between Fox and Nayler led to a complete rupture between them. Meanwhile, Simmons and her friends were publicly speaking and writing of Nayler in strongly messianic terms. .In October, Nayler, accompanied by a small group of followers, entered Bristol in a reenactment of Christ's entry into Jerusalem. He was arrested and charged with blasphemy. After a famous trial before Parliament, he was sentenced to be flogged, branded, and imprisoned. His supposed dying words, affirming a "spirit that delights to do not evil," remain an inspiration for modern Friends and were the basis of a book of sonnets by Kenneth Boulding.' (Rosemary Anne Moore, in Historical dictionary of the Friends (Quakers), second ed., p. 243) -- The text of `His Last Testimony, said to be delivered by him about two Hours before his Departure out of this Life; several Friends being present' is printed on p. 696: see photograph.
