Book First Edition
Pictorial Boards. Condition: Fine. First Edition. np, 44 color illustrations. Text in English. Equal measures contemplative and bleak, "Angels in Fall" is Karin Apollonia Muller's compelling study of the urban and man-made landscape of Los Angeles. Shot in a muted palette with nary a blue sky or sunshine in sight, the German-born photographer's adopted city seems permanently cloaked in grey and solitude. A brand new, pristine example of this gem (cited on page 284 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II") still in the publisher's shrinkwrap. Photography Monograph.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 48 pages. Published in 2009. Collection of color photographs presented as an Artist Book. Limited Edition of 500 copies. An austerely elegant production by Karin Apollonia Muller and Chris Pichler: Oversize-volume format. Pale gray cloth boards with photographic reproduction pasted on the recessed center. Photographs by Karin Apollonia Muller. There is no text. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper to the highest standards. In glassine DJ with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Karin Apollonia Muller's "On Edge". Her much-awaited second collection, which took her more than eight years to complete. "While 'Angels in Fall' (2001) dealt with the disconnect between human beings and their environment, 'On Edge' shows the earth crumbling away, and our futile efforts to control or hide the subtle invasion of nature into cultivated spaces. Working in color with a muted palette and low contrast, Muller creates powerful images which evoke a sense of displacement in keeping with artist's 'visitor status' as a foreigner in Los Angeles. Born in Heidelberg in 1963, Muller grew up as the daughter of a sea captain. She studied photography and film at the University of Essen before moving to the United States in 1995. Karin Apollonia Muller's work has been widely exhibited in the United States and Europe, and is included in such collections as The Museum of Modern Art New York, The Whitney Museum New York, and The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Karin Apollonia Muller collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition of 500 copies, indicated as such by the publisher. It is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the half-title page (right underneath her printed name) by Karin Apollonia Muller. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Karin Apollonia Muller did NOT sign most copies of the Limited Edition. A rare signed copy thus. 31 color plates. Karin Apollonia Muller's "Angels In Fall" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the most brilliant photographers of our time. A fine copy. Hardcover. Condition: vg-. First edition. Inscribed "For Veronica" and signed on Thank You page at rear by artist. Oblong Quarto. Unpaginated. Original photo-illustrated, paper-covered boards with green lettering on cover and spine. Illustrated endpapers. Color frontispiece. Müller's first photography book after moving to Los Angeles in 1995. An investigation of people and their relationship to landscape, their environment, their space: "In Angeles in Fall I observe the space and eventually discover a solitary person, disrupting the vast open space" (Müller). The remarkable color palette in Müller's photography is do to her efforts to search for "a certain type of diffused light that seems to evoke things which are beyond the visible. My mother would often call me asking why I was staying in Los Angeles for so long, and I would reply that I was waiting for the perfect light. It is rare and difficult to catch. Sometimes I would have to wait for months for the "decisive moment" of light" (Müller). Müller's photographs contain an extraordinary subtlety reminiscent of William Turner's land- and seascapes. Paired with a critical and poetic text by Rodney Sappington this book evokes vibrantly the "drama and beauty of living in Los Angeles." Light wear along edges of binding with moderate bump of upper right corner of back cover, bump and half inch chip at the top middle of back cover with four inch scratch going down. Block with light yellowing in margins not affecting images. Binding in overall good-, interior in very good condition.

Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Photographically illustrated laminated paper-covered boards, no dust jacket as issued. Photographs by Karin Apollonia Müller. Essay (in English and German) by Rodney Sappington. Unpaginated with 40 four-color plates. 10-1/2 x 12 inches. [Cited in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume II. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2006).]. New in publisher's shrink-wrap. From the publisher: "Karin Müller's photography brilliantly interprets the landscape of Los Angeles from a new point of view - here landscape is displayed as a slice of the earth's surface, never purely representative of geography, region, or city. Landscapes are never stable - they evoke human absence as well as human presence, and shift with the spatio-temporal coordinates of human desire. Müller's L.A. is a world where the synthetic and global have overtaken the natural and the local, where the landscape has become a mercurial web of living dreams. Her images are both immediately real and eerily distant depictions of the vertiginous changes unraveling our everyday lives--she captures an era in which economic change is written on the streets, the bodies, and the transformation of just about every form of the built (and natural) environment.".

Frontispiece photograph. Signed Karin Apollonia Müller, hand-numbered 4/30 on title page. As issued, the book size C-print "Fog" laid in, as issued. Illustrated with forty-four sublime full page color photographs depicting Los Angeles and California land and cityscapes. With a prosaic essay by Rodney Sappington: "Angels in Fall marks what has occurred in spaces that divide and isolate. Surely cities are falling apart - so too are our wilderness areas and open expanses of desert. They are also falling together in particular ways that are becoming clear as habitat and community are in the remaking. Perhaps this is sad beauty. The measured shape of stillness and the light-quick transformation of landscapes today are striking. The corporate plazas and nature trails have become part of an expansive museum on which humans become a footnote in a history that has outstripped them (us)." Extraordinary rendering of contrasting environments of land and life in California. Contains list of the photographs, taken from 1995 to 1999, at rear. The laid-in C-print with light imperfections in margins, one minor vertical line indentation on verso of print, one inch, barely visible on print.
