Four plays adapted for theatrical representation, each with special title page, engraved general title page representing a scene from the play, and frontispiece showing an actor in a leading part. Hardcover. Full leather binding with gold lettering on spine and a decorative gold border stamped on covers. Title pages dated 1791. Each section has own pagination. Binding is strong but leather is dry and scuffed, with thin cracks showing at hinges and corners worn and rounded. Much of the gold stamping on the spine is worn -- the red label is mostly gone, and there is a chip out of the black label bearing the names of the plays. Boards firmly attached. Pages clean and unmarked. Overall, a good copy of this collection of English drama published by John Bell.

Clean pages with noticeable tanning and foxing throughout. More pronounced to free endpapers and pastedowns. Pen inscription to front pastedown. Binding remains firm. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Gilt lettering is darkened. Heavy splits and peeling to spine and corners. Minor loss to spine. A fair 1774 quarter-bound hardcover in faded/rubbed marbled paper-covered boards which are rubbed/bumped to the edges/corners, the front board is partially disbound and the remaining binding is fragile, the leather spine is rubbed and well bumped to the ends with almost illegible gilt lettering, internally the names of the plays have been historically inked on the front endpaper and the rest of the text-block is otherwise unmarked and occasionally lightly foxed with several small turn-downs at the corners. The engraved frontispiece is by A. Runciman and A Gavin with 5 further engravings (one of each playwright) by Gowan. Carefully packaged and posted within 48 hours from our wee bookshop in Scotland.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. While this book is structurally intact, it is fragile. The leather boards are very rubbed. Spine - also very rubbed with raised bands and very worn at head and tail. Rectangular double-lined decorative border in gilt is just about visible on both boards. Inscriptions on ffep; one of which may be early 18th century. See photos for evidence of some of these phenomena - though taking further photos not possible due to book's fragility. NB. Complete with all 25 engravings. Open tears on pages 237/8 and 239/40; neither affecting text. The title page reads: 'Translated into English Verse by Mr Dryden' and 'Several other Eminent Hands' and 'The fifth addition, adorned with sculptures' - 'printed for J Tonson etc.' pp.296/18mo. A very nice title, with engraved frontispiece portrait of Charles Earl of Dorset, title frontispiece, portrait frontispiece to Persius, and 22 other engraved plates. 12mo, cxi (dedicatory preface by Dryden), Table, 296 pages. In full contemporary calf, somewhat worn, front joint and hinge neatly repaired. Owners' names to endpapers and title page, otherwise very clean and sound. ESTC ref T123512. Dryden translated a number of Juvenal's satires himself, and selected others, including his sons Charles and John, to translate the rest. The Persius satires are all by Dryden, with an introductory letter by Congreve.
